Zoot Cat's latest project put me in mind of this.

Frame just over 380 pounds, complete bike about 1,200 from DernySport UK

Derny bikes were originally built for motor-pacing racing cyclists from Bordeaux to Paris, precisely controlling speeds up to 50 mph with the racer just inches from the back mudguard, and the Derny rider sitting bolt upright and knees out for maximum draft.

It's just begging for a powerful e-motor, with perhaps a nice porteur rack instead of that petrol tank.

Looks like an early Harley or Indian. Funny how the "motorcycle" has made the full circle now.

Moped engine, tires, rims and spokes. A moped you can pedal at speed. I'm not sure how fast I'd want to go without suspension.

The Derny is a fixed gear, so, like with a stokemonkey, you have to keep pedaling. Never mind aerodynamic efficiency, it all helps break the wind for the guy behind.

The point is, it's proven to handle the sort of performance needed from a high-speed road ebike because it's optimised for utterly predictable handling. just imagine what would happen to the guy behind if you were to come off the throttle unexpectedly.

no fumes for the cyclist behind!
You folks are such courteous cyclists!

Ran across an article a long time ago describing one guy who was being paced by a car with a big aero shield behind it. Turned out the cyclist was being pulled by the car - via a piano wire which he somehow had clamped in his teeth

Amusing to see Derny still going strong (1949 Derny here):
