13 mile range on just the battery. Woo hoo! still, at least you can run to a nearby gas station for beer on e power alone.

I'm super psyched for this! I wonder what the longevity will be? Toyota is the master of over-engineering for these types of applications.

I wonder if you're better off getting one of the off-the-shelf conversions for the older priuses though?

I have a friend that put in a 10kw 40AH Thundersky pack in his prius plus a little computer trickery he can get 40 miles in EV mode alone.

If that battery pack can drive the car for 13 miles, it's gonna consist of high C rate cells. My guess would be some fairly stout lipo cobalt/manganese type stuff..

This car seems ripe for:

1. Pulling sweet cells out of the battery pack when the car is crashed or otherwise scrapped for parts & using them elsewhere.
2. Adding a bigger battery and turning it into a pure EV later down the road.

But i wonder.. why only 13 miles? seems silly. AND.. what's the price tag!

What I thought too. 25 mile range electric only seems like a minimum to me. Bear in mind too the dictum, always cut manufacturers range claims in half for real world driving.

I do understand though, that the previous cars went like 1 mile or less before the motor would start. So this does sound better! And more range is more money up front. Pretty cool if you can at least drop off a kid at school 4 miles away before the motor starts.

Sweet icecube, I need to get into prius hacking

The Prius Plug-in's lithium-ion battery is lightweight and compact, weighing a total of just 330 lb. So you get useful EV power and driving range without the costs of an electric-only EV battery, while maintaining plenty of cargo space and seating for five. Also, charge time from a standard 120V household outlet is only 3 hours.

330lbs of Li-Ion for a range of 13 miles??? Typos?
Typical ECar consumes 250wh/mi, so 3.25Kwh is needed for 13 miles. At a low 80wh/lbs, only 41lbs of battery is needed. Something's wrong.

Ev mode is capped into the low 50mph range...13 miles is a joke but for some people it would be the shit... what they need to do es instead of ev only mode focus more on the ev assist blending at highway speed and acceleration. I waste more gas getting up to hwy speed than traveling at hwy spped. Autos are always in the wrong gear in automatics which doesnt help Ive seen HondA insights ights with a 5th wheel of assist with startup acceleration. CRZ are priuses without the gay tree hugger look to them with 3 modes of ev assist. The eco mode having the worst 0-60 time ever of lik almost 20 seconds. All the technology is here but we arent ready to purchase it and companies are scared to lose money on to bold of a design... they cant keep up with the demand to offer it. we can go on and on on this.
