US-CPSC warns of Ridstar e-Bike battery fires

So Rad Power Bikes, a few months back, had (similar?) problems with the batteries on their ebikes (maybe less?) and the ensuing recall helped to put them out of business. Yet "Huizhou Xingqishi Sporting Goods Co., Ltd., of China [Ridstar], has refused to agree to an acceptable recall."
The consumer is left holding the bag, having to perform some inconvenient and possibly impossible (depending on location and available infrastructure) actions:
"Note: Do not throw this lithium-ion battery or device in the trash, the general recycling stream (e.g., street-level or curbside recycling bins) or used battery recycling boxes found at various retail and home improvement stores. Defective lithium-ion batteries must be disposed of differently than other batteries because they present a greater risk of fire. Your municipal household hazardous waste (HHW) collection center may accept this lithium-ion battery or device for disposal. Before taking your battery or device to a HHW collection center, contact it ahead of time and ask whether it accepts defective lithium-ion batteries. If it does not, contact your municipality for further guidance."

I'm pretty sure the federal government is attacking ebike companies lately, based on their size.
All lithium batteries have some very small risk of random explosion, that's their nature.
Other products with lithium batteries are not being targeted in the same way, i'm noticing.

Image is a little blurry, but could be the well known ejection issue with QR wheels and disc brake rotors with the rotor on the left and the caliper behind the axle. All the smarter manufacturers moved to having the rotor on the right in the front or the caliper in front when the lawsuits and settlements on that started flying.
Even worse.. It appears to be a bolt with a relatively small mating surface, and i don't see a lawyer lip. So if that got loose, you're definitely screwed.
I'm kinda glad these crappy bikes are being held to our standards finally. This will save a lot of teeth!

More like "our" regulatory orders for remedial action have no teeth:

and

CPSC urges... doesn't seem like holding up to any standards.
CPSC = The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
How many Ridstar ebike riders are actually going to even see this CPSC warning? And how many will stop riding them? Dispose of them? Especially with no reimbursement or recall from the manufacturer?
Not likely, at least for the time being. CPSC was gutted by Trump and the Supreme Court in early 2025.
Interesting, so we don't have these product safety standards enforced anymore for American products either?

When you say that I think of "Size" in the context of battery size. A hell of a lot more energy to fuel a fire in a typical ebike battery than a drone or cell phone hey. There is a "Marshals Guide Dealing with potential lithium battery fires" put out by the British Motorcycle Racing Club. "lithium battery fires on Motorcycles. As many of you are probably aware, more and more Racers are opting to make use of the lighter weight lithium batteries ..."
A mate tried to convince me to put one in one of my bikes the other week, no thanks I said. They may be very very safe but it's sitting directly under my balls

Sure we all know posters mistake using a LAB charger, they are probably lucky it didn't blow off!

It's no surprise govt is cutting services / changing things in a bad way. The federal debt is at a level where ~33% of the income you pay in taxes goes to pay interest on the government's debt. The government fails to function properly much above that. So regardless of who runs it, pressure to cut exists.
Note: this is very close to the debt to GDP the us govt had around world war 2.
But i can find a number of articles showing they are doing more enforcements lately so..
( maybe it's a way to collect taxes, just like tarriffs )

Not all pouch cells are hobbyking cells! they are volumetrically efficient, and a good form factor!

Isn't everyone glad their tax money is funding 'Learing' centers in Minnesota?
I detest a lot of what my tax dollars are spent on ( example: constant wars ) but understand that the only way i can stop paying for it is to expatriate. So why fret unless you're willing to take action.
Either way, i'm happy to see that China is not getting as much of a free ride through our consumer product safety laws.
Our government has been giving them unfair advantages over domestic companies and subsidizing their shipping for a long time.
Essentially making the US taxpayer subsidize another nation's industrial growth while hampering our own.. and also hurting a US' business prospects in many areas.
So it's nice to hear we're getting kicked in the balls with a slightly lower intensity in one arena. I'll take what i can get!

The 40 Trillion Federal debt of America is one thing, the yearly interest paid on it's quite another. It's nearly a Trillion a year now, and you'd be amazed where they draw it from to keep that fact out of sight. A lot comes from taxes though and a lot from 'new' borrowings. The total outstanding public and private debt across all sectors is over 100 trillion. The debt can never repaid so there will be a massive default one day soon, in the meanwhile though interest rates must be kept low, 3.6% now for the fed and 5~6% for all the housing. Corporate interest is probably in between them.
Debt is a shell game and I don't play shell games. But until the end we'll just pretend it's not coming and enjoy the world as it is
