Hi guys, just working through my 2 stage reduction and wondering what thickness belt i should use.
Its just the first stage 63-64 230kv pushing 3500 watts with a 15 to 60 tooth gear down on 5mm htd belt.
my question is will a 10mm belt be enough for a reliable drive?

I used a similar motor in the first eCortina and I can say that even the 15mm belt will fail unless you wrap around the driving pulley, creating more tooth engagement, with an large diameter idler. Get as much wrap as you can. I will be posting such a system for the 80x Turnigy within the next week. I will start with a 15mm belt, and will try to get a 25mm belt from my local Gates distributor.

Because of the relatively high Kv I originally had two 15mm wide x 5mm pitch belts, a primary and secondary, and the secondary belt failed almost immediately from the magnified torque loads. Neither of these belts had an idler.

My advice is to glance at Recumpence's drives and do the same. They are proven reliability.

You can get belts split to any width you want.

Gates PowerGrip GT3 has the highest torque capacity for 5mm pitch, I think.

The HTD bible gives an indication of the limits:

You can download software to work it all out from the Gates or Conti-Tech websites, or use MITCalc.

If making a two stage reduction;

Stage one should be 5mm pitch at least 15mm wide. I would rather see you go up to 20 or 25mm wide, however. Stage two should be 8mm pitch (Polychain is best, though HTD would work) 20mm width.

That's pretty much what i was hoping to be able to do, I only have about 18mm workable space next to the motor on the first stage so a 15mm belt is perfect, now i just need to teach myself how to make pulleys and bearings in inventor.

Will 5mm x 15mm work with a 15t drive pulley at 3500 watts?
