I had to enable some security setting in the bios of my dyi computer in order to get it to download. It was no big deal to do it. It doesn't seem to be much different than 10. Shrunk the annoying start screen to a widget and added some crap to the taskbar.

Today was update day. Did a couple computers, a bunch of clocks, two phones to android 12 and a Jyers firmware flash to my 3d printer. By far the printer update is the most interesting to me.

I've heard that it isn't more privacy invasive and much better looking now that microsoft has ditched a decent % of the black and white padded cell design.

The new file explorer wastes a lot of screen space and loses some features, and that bugs me a lot.

It also makes managing file associations a huge pain in the ass. Another problem for a power user.

I would call it a visual upgrade but a functionality downgrade.

I have found in practice that Linux Mint is less buggy than Windows 10, doesn't get in your way, doesn't limit you, doesn't waste screen space, and uses a fraction of the RAM. Also, it's significantly more responsive.

Also, if you use a GPU passthrough, strangely, windows apps, even 3d games run faster in a linux VM than they do on raw hardware. Why so many testers of GPU passthroughs see this remains a mystery.. my suspicion is that linux disk caching is better than windows', and the benefit of that caching exceeds the additional overhead of running a VM.

I would run windows 11 in a VM but never adopt it as my primary OS.

I own a MS Surface tablet/notebook that I use in the shop and when on trips that I tried to update to Win 11. Apparently not only do you need an enabled TPM you also need a 8th gen processor. My i5 7300U didn't cut it even though it had the TPM.

No big deal as Win will continue to get security updates until Oct. 2025. After that I guess it's back to Linux.

I can not use Windows 11, as my computer is to old, I wish I had a i5 7th gen, slice 3 more gens off that and you have what I have. The only thing I really need is a gpu card to get more monitors but my computer case is to slim which means the hassle of swapping everything over to a cheap case or free case. Might as well just build a Ryzen 3600 with a Tomahawk and some Viper ram and a gpu, but there are some nice igpu's now. I like to keep up to date with the Ryzen stuff once a year, and I go to my usual sites for that and it sure aint Linus S.

I just did a fresh install of W10, I thought something was up but I realized that Microsoft has done something with their email servers that was never a problem before, their extensions are critical now for email logins. I thought I was hacked, that someone was going for my emails and I really dont know how the extensions were changed on the recovery email. It turned out the ext on the recovery email didnt matter, but it sure matters when you log into an email account with Microsoft so that tripped me up for a bit.

Do you think the problems with Windows 11 is because Bill Gates is not a apart of it anymore or has Bill Gates not been apart of Windows for so long that even 10 and 8.1 he had no part in it.

I've read more and Microsoft is very quickly defeating a lot of new attempts to claw back the control they've stolen from users in Windows 11. For example, it's exceedingly difficult to change your browser and prevent Microsoft edge from being the default browser. Someone put up a tool to allow you to change this, but that tool was patched against within a week or two.

I have two computers capable of running Windows 11, but zero interest in touching it now. I'm very close to having a feature-complete windows software replacement stack in linux. For games, Windows 7 will be piped through a virtual machine that has a dedicated graphics card. This is known to have better performance than running them in Win 10. Why sell yourself short? :)
