I've never bought anything off of it. There was something I wanted. Do I have to get a paypal account to purchase something off there? I hate paypal. I wanted to use my credit card.

eBay owns Paypal.

If you don't like Paypal don't use eBay.

But you can use eBay without paying through Paypal. Simply go to eBay.com and read their guidelines. Sellers make their own decisions on the payment methods they accept.

Also

Can you make just one thread in the general discussion titled, "Questions morph999 has, can you help?" or similar and put ALL your basic questions there? When I browse the forums, lately I've been seeing more and more posts asking basic questions whose answers can be found with simple Google search skills.

ok, my next question....

which 2-way pager should I buy

A gorilla two-way alarm
http://www.rockheadbikes.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=590003
or

a
Steelmate Martian alarm ?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-TWO-WAY-STEELMATE-MARTIAN-SERIES-MOTORCYCLE-ALARM_W0QQitemZ300296416335QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item300296416335&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A727%7C66%3A1%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

I don't think the Steelmate has a tilt sensor and that is the only downside that I see so far. Or is there another one that anyone thinks is good?

or an auto page $100

So I guess that means you really like me?

I don't know you so I don't have an opinion either way.

YET

For the forum to be most useful it needs a wide range of questions, answers and user experiences on all manner of ebike things. If I look at all the new posts and just see endless streams of simple and vaguely related questions, it's frustrating.

Thanks for changing the title, I can only imagine this will be a long thread!

The one from eBay you've linked to ships from Hong Kong. I'd skip that one even though it's cheap.

Of the other two, perhaps the Auto page? What do you hope to accomplish with this thing? eBike protection of some sort?

No.

This thread is for questions that morph999 has about generally everything.

Why do canadians love bikes and the internet so much?

Canadians have a high standard of living, we love cycling, and most can afford $3,000 ebikes.

The internet is a great place to solve problems and chat for educational stuff. We are stuck indoors 4 months of the year, plus we all own computers/w high speed connections :) .

Here is the chain that I'm thinking of getting for my ebike. It's 20lbs. My new e-bike I should say. My new e-bike will be a mountain bike with a 5303 motor.

http://www.amazon.com/OnGuard-Beast-5016L-Bicycle-Chain/dp/B000FL04OG/ref=pd_sim_sg_1/179-9769194-2047046

I won't be carrying the chain all the time. Just the days that I'm going to the grocery and stuff. What do you think of the chain. Too big?

I've had two bikes stolen because the lock and cable was too cumbersome for me to bother with. I still have that lock and cable. Now I always lock my bike. Don't get a lock you won't use. Consider two locks. A good NYC type U-lock is usually sufficient for quick trips. A behemoth like that or my 6.8# of through-hardened 10mm chain is reserved for when I'll be parking for extended periods in dubious neighbourhoods. Then I use both locks.
A good trick is to leave a lock attached to the rack where you regularly park your bike.
For myself the more challenging security issue is the batteries.

I might go with the onguard 5018 instead. It's 14 lbs. I could probably handle that.

Before ebikes there was (still is) an axiom that all bikes weigh fifty pounds.
A 20# bike needs 30# of locks.
A 40# bike only needs 10# of locks.
. . .and nobody steals fifty pound bicycles.

the mini Ulock i showed you last time you asked about locks is the best bet. You'll actually use it all the time. I'd wager it just as secure as one of those chains, and it is much easier to carry/use. Plus its only 23-25$

what's wrong with just wrapping that 5018 chain around the top bar on my bike? Are you seeing something I'm not? Someone else said they used it just fine.

I'm going to purchase all this stuff from Amazon at one time.

Onguard 5018 chain
Gorilla two way pager alarm $178
two mirrors -- one for each side of my handle bars http://www.amazon.com/Mirrycle-MTB-Mountain-Bicycle-Mirror/dp/B0009R96YK/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
$18 Bolle shellmet http://www.amazon.com/Bolle-Hot-Helmet-Black-X-Large/dp/B001EYUB14/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=generic&qid=1235917026&sr=1-7
Nashbar frame bag..it's got 92 cu. inches of room http://www.amazon.com/Nashbar-Frame-Pump-Bag/dp/B000RL6GVY/ref=pd_bbs_3?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1235965596&sr=8-3

Sunlite handlebar bag for $6

Here's the Gorilla alarm...people have a lot of good things to say about it. It's small. It's easy to install, too.

http://www.amazon.com/Gorilla-Cycle-Alarm-Paging-System/dp/B001C023IE/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1235915683&sr=8-1

Like I said, though, I was also look at the STEELMATE Martian alarm but I'd have to use e-bay and paypal to get it and it doesn't have a tilt sensor either and less range than the Gorilla. And someone said that his broke. What I like about the Gorilla is that if someone cuts the wires to the battery, my pager will alert me.

and here is the 5018 chain
http://www.amazon.com/OnGuard-Beast-5018-Bicycle-Chain/dp/B000FL04PA/ref=acc_glance_sg_ai_-2_7_img

Maybe I could wrap the 5018 chain around the bottom bar since I'm using the triangle frame bag for the Gorilla alarm. I was going to mount the gorilla alarm underneath the seat.

what do you guys think?

I have three options

1) just use a heavy chain on my bike and if I go to the grocery, I can take batteries in with me to prevent being stolen

2) use a heavy chain and a two way pager alarm and leave my valuable items on my bike and be alerted via pager if something happens

3) use a heavy chain and still leave everything on my bike and just risk it all (I think this option is just asking to be robbed)

Get the noose instead of the basic chain because with the larger ring on the end of the chain you have more options for locking as the end's don't have to meet in the middle. The chain can be shorter if its a noose so you carry less weight. You can wrap the noose around a post then put it through the wheel and lock the mini u-lock to the frame.

Shipping weight is 5lbs at http://www.amazon.com/2009-Kryptonite-York-Noose-Chain/dp/B000LPHNYA/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
There is also an On Guard version of the noose.

I always use one of those cheap cable locks, never had a problem, probably because I always lock my bike in a high visibility area. The way I figure it, the lock has to be real easy to carry and use, or I might just chance it one to many times not using a heavy pain in the butt lock. Although I would not leave my bike for a few hours or overnight, without the use of a high strength lock.

Anyone with wire cutters could have your bike in less than 5 minutes. I agree about the lock needing to be easy to use and carry. Mini U locks are perfect(I think mine is an ongaurd bulldog) They are really easy to use and would require a much bigger tool and more time to break. The cable locks offer no security, they just keep the honest folks honest.

Once I get better range, I plan on using my bike to get groceries. I was thinking of scrapping the idea of an alarm and getting some kind of bike trunk to lock up my stuff and just using a thick chain. Maybe a 10mm or 12mm thick chain.

Those of you who go biking often. Do you like night riding or daytime riding? I think night riding would have less cars but might be more dangerous.

Early morning in the dark is the best. Very few cars at the lights in my town just before sunrise. Most commuters here out at that time have jobs that are in El Paso, so they stick to the interstate. In winter, when I work later in the morning, my ride clashes with the NMSU employee rush, and then it sucks. I don't know that I'd ride at all in the conditions you describe Morph.

At night, the better your lights the better the ride, but I find that knowing the route is the way to go. If I ride a strange route at night, I find every single pothole on the way. You do see em, but too late most of the time.

As for locks, in daylight, a relatively cheap lock is also what I use, but I don't find myself in the store for more than 20 minuites max. Again, early morning is the way to go. You ever heard of a lowlife speed tweaker that gets up before 9:00 am? By afternoon, they are more likely to be lurking about, trying to steal something to sell for the evening drug buy. In my town, bike theft is not such a big thing though, mostly they want your ford pickup.

I like to ride on the side streets that are kinda parallel to the main roads but that's not always possible. With night riding there's definitely less traffic but unless you have really good lighting you'll hit the potholes as dogman said. Traveling at 20+ mph you just don't have the time to veer out of the way of things when you see them at the last second.I get groceries all the time with my ebike and just use a really thick coiled cable lock (~3ft).I lock it up to something (post, bike rack) in an area that's highly visible with alot of people going by and never had any problems as of yet other than some A-Hole dumping a full can of A&W root beer in one side of my panniers which left a real sticky mess.
