Thankyou StudEbiker, yeah its a ball to ride esp offroad! I've only got sand tracks near my place which vary from very soft to semi-hard so the gears are handy for overcoming that without excess current draw. The bike's only downfall is the main drive chain pops off the front 32t crank sprocket at random - i'm working on a chain retention device now, that should cure it.

Your Bike E is looking good, i wish you could put a nice big 203mm disc rotor on that small front wheel, that would look mean  :D
How long do you expect the build process to take? It looks really comfy to ride and i love its simple design too :)

I had trouble with my chain jumping off at random, on my Giant Trance3, and found my new chainring was slightly bent. Used a piece of wood and a hammer to straighten it out and things were much better. In the end I still went with a chain retention unit though as I don't ever want it coming off. This was abit over $40 but money well spent as I have not lost the chain in 1500 miles so it werqs well. Not sure about your tube diameter so it may not fit. I also put it in place of the front deraileur I never used. Nice biuild you did there. http://paulcomp.com/chainkeeper.html

No dropped chain over 1500miles sounds good to me, cheers for the link biohazardman! My seat tube is a weird shape down near the E type front deraileur mount area so i'll use the bottom bracket style mount. The guides look to be fairly slim too which should make installing it with the freewheeling crank setup a little easier compared to the DH units i've seen and contimplated using.

Thankyou! :D

I am hoping to have it running on electric power by sometime in July. Most of the expensive parts are purchased now and are here. I still have to build the plates for holding the Koll motor and the jackshaft. I stopped by the local place with the plasma cutter service this week and hopefully I'll be able to have him cut the plates up soon. I am going to run it off the Headway pack that I've been using on the TF for starters and probably get something else later. I want to have 20ah on board eventually. I have been riding it around un-powered to get the bugs worked out and it is a SUPER comfy ride and gets great looks and smiles. :) I am planning to put a Sturmey-Archer hub brake in the front eventually or if I could find another Bike E front fork to modify I might consider your suggestion of adding the disc.

I've gotten a few questions about how my Sturmey Archer drive-train looks so I'll post the latest pictures of my bike here.

Here's how it looked originally:

Image

Here's how it looks now. All the electronic components/batteries are stored in pannier bags for a much more stealth look.

Running very thin (read harsh) 700c x 25c tires now and its unlocked quite a bit of top-end speed. Running at 7s it hits about 42mph forcing me to re-install my front V-brake to help with brake fade on my drum brake (which only really happens during hard stop and go city riding and downhills).

BMC front motor, Crystalyte 12FET analog controller and 14S 10Ah lipo built in frame - the aluminum plate acts as harness and heatsink for controller so it doesn't overheat being enclosed in frame bag.

I really like that Surly! Oh so really close to getting one of those!
My most recent bike finally got powered ...
Been busy doing other things in life vs. messing with this bike and V3 parts through ebikes-sf ^^^ that I got last year.
Anyway... here's the before:
Image
And here's the after:
Image

I tried this weight in the trunk a few times on my Trance and for street riding it really works well. I was very surprised to not "feel" it back there! I can fit 2 10Ah packs in parallel into the trunk with controller and be under the weight spec for the rear rack and the 3rd one puts it over. So, to run 30Ah I have wide velcro straps to hold the 3rd one in the triangle if absolutely needed... there's just enough room for it.

Again... before & after
Image
Image

The trunk has holes cut behind the mesh to allow airflow... I'll have to monitor the heat to see if more holes and additional heatsink are needed.
Image

Oh... and it weighs under 50lb when ready to roll for a daily commute (subtract 4lbs for the board on the scale and it's about 48lbs). That's almost double the 26lb starting weight. It's quite noticeably lighter feeling rolling down the road compared to my 60lb Trance. The crappy front forks on that Trance might also be a factor... idk...

New to Forum and trying to keep up the learning curve.

A Giant Boulder aluminum frame
Image

It's a Goldden Motor front 500w 36v kit that came with the 36v 12Ah SLA pack. I've since gone to 48V 12Ah SLA but 40lbs of weight on the rear rack wasn't making me nor my panniers happy. Made a picture to justify to me the benefits of switching to lithium.
Image

I've collected a couple laptop batteries and made a pack with em. Soldered a bunch of Deans Pro tabs to the 2 packs on the right and the rainbow colored one I made with cells of similar voltage and soldered 12ga wire across 4 pairs to give me 20Ah using pairs of 2500mAh batteries. So the picture shows 3 packs of 18V 20Ah 5s4P.
Image
My cheap hobbyking charger peaks them at 20.5v each so it's a 61.5v pack at 20Ah(more like ~10ish realistically)

This is how I use it now. With the Li-Ion pack I can do 20MPH(32kph) without trying and I've topped it out at 34MPH(54.7kph) downhill(phone gps)
Image

Hope I didn't leave anything out. Hope you enjoy. :D
