Hi.
Starting a thread to keep track of the progress on a Electric kart conversion I am working on.

Bought a cheap 4 stroke racing kart and have a PMSM HSG I plan to fit to it. (Kia Kona, same as Hyundai)

The goal is to have around 20 - 40Kw peak useing salvaged landrover EV battery modules and a honda IMA inverter.

I have stripped the HSG and IMA inverter and started the process of brain swapping the inverter. De soldered MCU.

Attached are some photos of the components so far.

The HSG starts and runs nicely senseless on a old vesc 4.12 I have, but due to only supporting 12s max and no field weakening the highest rpm I could get was ~1100 with an erpm of around 3300.

Wow, that’s going to be a really fun kart. I assume it had maybe 8 horsepower before? Going up to 25-50 electric horsepower is going to be a huge difference, make sure you’ve got good safety gear! You’ll have to find out if the original hardware can handle it (chains, mounts, axles, sprockets, etc)

I had to stop and work out the references and look a couple things up, I have a 41ish Kw electric boost motor on my BMW, that will get ya cooking right along by itself, and I have had entire commutes that was just the electric and the petrol kicking in to top up the batteries.

SO w wee bitty cart with ballpark half of that must be tonnes of fun.

I'd love to see and hear more about your eBMW. Will it run only on Gasoline too?

Pics if possible please!

Honda GX160 (or could be a GX200). Gearbox is usually 2:1 or 6:1 (both were available).

Tough to tell, but I don't see much in the way of brakes (maybe a single, inboard disc?).

Never mind. I just realized that you must just have a stock one with the tiny ICE engine. I almost bought one of those to but couldn't get over the fact that it would be very speed restricted when running on gas. I bought my 1st Volt then.

I would love to say it is all smooth and eco nomi cal... but honestly, i use the boost system to get better performance, I have a long history of doing terrible things to the safety features of my cars... This one was just nearly plug and play (ok, I bough software this time heh)

SO yeah, the active hybrid 5 6 cylinder bmw with an electrical boost motor.. what could go wrong?
Mine is black but yeah.

It does not have quite the acceleration of the M5 .. but I really don't miss it very often. In most my driven need to burn petrol, it handles the urge just perfectly.
