So bit off conflicting opinions found when I researched this, some say battery needs to be on so the BMS can balance the cells, most battery instructions saying switch off , Not all BMS the same so this question aimed more at the budget the BMS,

Unlike a lead acid car battery (alternator periodically charging) an e-bike Li-ion battery is never under a load (ON) when charging (either in or out of e-bike) with exception of auxilliary pedal power generator during ride or solar panel  . Same goes for a Tesla (unless solar panels on roof, etc. A Li-ion powerbank could be under load while being periodically charged by solar panels, etc.

Hopefully the following replies in this ES thread (https://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=97705) are helpful (e.g. read reply by fechter and amberwolf's helpful post should provide additional insight which i've copied and pasted below ...

There are a number of threads on how BMSs work, if you look thru this list:
https://endless-sphere.com/forums/search.php?keywords=bms+work*&terms=all&author=&sc=1&sf=titleonly&sr=topics&sk=t&sd=d&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search
Not everything is relevant, mostly easy to figure out by title.
Hope this helps :thumb:
