Agreed. My first setup was a rack trunk like that. It made the bike handle terribly. Low as possible is the way to go, whether in a pannier or in the frame.
They sell a seatpost mount rear rack for $18 which I will definately be buying. I was thinking the exact same thing, buy the seatpost rack and add in some other mount bars to chainstays.
I dont think you can beat the deal, especially with free shipping on orders more the $49. I dont think that counts for International shipments, just American.
Ok, what about just using these tubus clamps onto some 16" rack extenders to attach from the bottom of the frame to about the middle of the top part of the rack? just to give it some additional strength without any major refit? View attachment 1
BTW The guy at Jandd said that as long as he's been making racks he's never had a failure at the eyelet screw, which baffles me as it seems like the weakest point but I'm not an engineer.
This is not the best diagram, the extender would be further back on the rack and angled but using paint program don't know how to angle pics but you get the idea, attach extenders to clamps and rack adding a bit of strength, I'd think.
