svchost.exe question

For some reason in my task manager I've got 12 svchost.exe running and from what I remember that seems a little excessive. Is this normal for Windows 7? Would it be safe to end process on a few of them? I've also noticed that there is activity on only a couple of them and the other ones are just open for some reason. I've run all my virus and malware scans and nothing pops up.

Thank you for the link. It turns out I need all of those running.

Perfectly normal for every windows Service and some are more active than others, all your essentials - networking, logon, network browsing, firewall, local iis if you have it, etc.. these all use SvcHost.exe or show up in task manager as such.

If you really want to examine an operating system pick up one the various flavors of Linux. You can go as deep as you want or even roll your version.
