I would like to get a feeling of what all of you are using to secure your bikes.

Please post pics & links if possible---I want to secure a adult trike.

Thanks

Right now I am off the road but this is what I hope to use........http://cgi.ebay.ie/NEW-HEAVY-DUTY-70MM-ALARM-LOCK-PADLOCK-110DB-SIREN_W0QQitemZ250597531825QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_HaG_Lock_Safes_GL?hash=item3a58c6e0b1

Maybe a pair of them, with some very heavy gauge chain.

well, I gave up on trying to make a theft proof bike. I'm just going to take my batteries and controller inside whenever I go anywhere. So, I'm voting for quick release battery removal as the best option right now. Adding 15 lbs of a metal box really was a downer for me after experiencing a lightweight setup. I now can understand the appeal of the bionx bikes, too. It's pretty cool to be able to stand up and pedal hard while also hitting the throttle.

Also, I'm growing to love the 36v setup over the 48v setup. More lightweight and besides, going 30 mph or over is asking for a hospital visit. Today, I hit a huge pothole and thankfully was only going 15 mph.

So here is a vote for the topeak bike explorer rack and the topeak DX MTX bag with hard panels...(the biggest bag they have)

I use this:

http://www.discountlocks.co.uk/Master-Excel-Combination-Padlocks-50mm-p/master%20excel%20cp%2050mm.htm?%24%24tid=L33TL19zAd5XTjAdZj9LR5QhzRZnRoX7wg-zOJ6I4Ams-nhJ6HGCnqWiYNMAr3io

and a steel rope made by a local rope and sling specialist.

I like the combination lock so I dont have to carry any keys.

I did a quick Google search and found it for about $22.75 with free shipping from here:

The buy.com link wants $28.62 which includes the shipping charge.

IMO, it looks like a toy.
What activates the alarm? Does it only trigger after the lock is breached?
What diameter is the shackle and is it through hardened?
How weather proof is the alarm? Who pays attention to alarms anyway?
With its gee-gaws and being less than half the price of a semi-serious lock I think it's a joke.

This link tells you the lock specs--cast steel for one. http://www.smarthome.com/81011/Heavy-Duty-Siren-Alarm-Padlock-SAP-01/p.aspx

This is a youtube video of the alarm http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kd7g...AFB03F0A&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=75

This is a GREAT video of the lock in action & I've also seen one of it under water

I, for one, am interested in it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHITvIIyZR4

The one thing in these videos don't tell you is how to turn it off without activating it. And once activated does it ever turn off on it's own or continue to sound until you turn it off or the barreries die?

LOL at the lock attached to the chain saw sitting on the ground, can't get more secure than that

Looks like a neat lock though, would at least alert you when someone was trying to thieve something from you.

this doubles as bike security and sucka-foo deflection device, I really don't see any way to get my bike that doesn't involve heavy machinery when this lock is in play

I have one of those JC whitney alarms and it is the sorryest thing that i have ever had 'if you need it i will ship it for the cost of shipping. :(

i use i thin light weight cable chain with built in lock. I lock it up at the pub leaving all the batteries unlocked and never had anyone touch it. Its kinda in my view for most of the night while im playing poker. Not one person has noticed its an electric bike yet.
I get comments like how can you ride a bike with a jacket on dont you get all sweaty ?
is that thing straped to the back wheel for your lights ?
gee you carry alot of gear on your bike...

You know, if the pager alarms (the ones that PAGE YOU when someone is messing with your bike, not just sound an alarm for about $40) were not so cheap, I might be interested in that alarm pad-lock as a quick easy alarm, but like AJ said, unless it really disables the movement, it's not really worth much.

I really like that Fugetaboutit Lock! Looks beefy, but I have to wonder, how much does that chain alone weigh??!?!

I'll pull up a link to the thread with the alarms with pagers if anyone is interested.

In this day of age with all the cordless power tools ANY lock i have seen you guys up here i could cut through with an 125mm angle grinder and a ultra thin cut off disk in under 15 seconds...Quite Simply IMHO, there is no way to protect your bike IF a thief really wants to get it, all you can do is make it a lil harder for them. Good pair of bolt cutters will make short work of most of the locks i've seen here to, heck even i could pick most of them in under 30 seconds... My suggestion would be if you have an expensive bike don't leave it unattended, if you are going somewhere it will be, take the bus or get a lift.

Like KiM said, a thin cut-off disk on one of these:

And you're through any lock in about 10 seconds. Doesn't make a lick of difference in the brand, or if it's hardened or not. If you want to spend some bucks, you can get high-end stuff that is practically silent when you tape over the motor vent/cooling holes.

A tiny little cordless hacksaw with a diamond dust blade will even fit in your pocket and still get through any lock/chain in a few seconds.

I went to go dirtbike with a buddy, he couldn't find the key to his trailer hitch lock that he kept on his parked trailer. We went to the fred meyer down the street, bought a $4 hacksaw and a $6 diamond dust blade, and I cut right through his case hardened genuine master lock in about 15 seconds.

Locks are a joke to protect from a pro. All they can do is prevent a kid from just grabbing your bike and running away, and any bike lock prevents this equally well.

This cordless hacksaw is 2.2lbs... It fits in a large pants pocket, or easily in a hoodie pocket or under a jacket. Don't even need a backpack.

Combine with a diamond grit blade:

And for a total of about $150-200, you've got a key to any bike lock that is about as fast to use as having the actual key.

I JUST bought a 125mm Makita angle grinder last week Luke, my faithful Metabo finally
gave up the ghost blew HUGE hole in the comutator :-( Loving the new slightly lighter Makita
though... showz me your lock fellas i'll showz ya how insecure it really is heheh...Reciprocating saws FTMFW to
Love that lil number Luke they get in places the trust grinder won't ;)

KiM

Sorry to hear about your Metabo my friend. Mine is still running strong, but I bet it's only got 10% of the hours yours had on it. lol You're a damn artist with an angle grinder! Like a human 50 axis milling machine powered by beer. lol

Those little diamond hacksaw blades are so wicked. Softer material wants to clog the surface, so they actually perform better on harder materials like case hardened locks, chains, or expensive bike locks like kryponites etc.

The normal procedure for removing "the club" device used to be to simply hacksaw or snip through the steering wheel, then flex the wheel a bit to remove the club. Well, this freaking sucks for a repo guy, cause the dealership gets charged like $200+ to replace the cut steering wheel. With the advent of the little diamond hacksaw blades on a pocket recipro saw, a repo guy can cut through "The Club" in about 10 seconds or so, and the steering wheel isn't ruined in the process, which saves the dealership money.

Or, for the bastards that steel Hondas, most of them prefere that the car is fitted with "The Club", as it gives a good leverage point for your foot to push upon to sheer the steering wheel lock pin. Once the club has aided in breaking the steering wheel lock, it's then effortlessly removed by sliting or snipping the steering wheel.
