Do you need a freewheel if you have a geared hub motor?

With a flip-flop hub, you reverse rotation of the wheel when you flip it, right? That won’t work with a geared hub motor as they’re directional. It might work with a direct drive hub.

Disc or Wheel locker activated by an ignition key?

I talked to a guy who designed an automatic frame lock that locked through the wheel. He said they made it unlock when you return, but they didn’t think they should make it automatically lock in case some glitch made it lock while riding. I guess they didn’t want to risk the liability.

    Charger for Iococca EVG

Thanks, everyone! I’ll talk to him and see what he’d like to do.

Target: 35Mph, Trek 820 Frame, 36 OR 72V. What would YOU do?

This! I converted a Trek 820 (2012 or 2013 maybe), and I’m pretty comfortable doing these speeds on my well maintained suburban streets. I top out at about 28 mph and haven’t spent enough time going down hills to know much about 35 mph, but I’d guess that doing it on a regular basis might be a...

    Charger for Iococca EVG

Someone asked me for some help, so I thought I’d check here to see if I can get him some. It’s not my bike, and I don’t have it in my possession. He has an Ioccoca EVG with 24 volt SLA, I think. It’s not charging, and he thinks the charger is bad. I don’t recall specifically why he thinks that...

Help programming Golden Motor dual motor ebike?

Thanks, LewTwo! I thought it was something like that. I have access to Windows 10, but not XP or 7. I'll have to figure something out. Also, I think we need to figure out whether we have Magic Pie 3, 4, or 5, right? Different software? I asked Golden Motor China for help identifying which we have.

Help programming Golden Motor dual motor ebike?

Hello ES! I did a quick ES search and couldn't find info, so I was hoping someone here could help me, or direct me to a thread or something, or should I just contact Golden Motor? I own a Pedego store, but we take in other brand ebikes for service. A customer brought in a Golden Motor brand...

Need advice on fat tadpole trike BBSHD build

Thanks, for the link, eTrike! I forgot that Paul did larger packs. I'll have to take a closer look. I wanted to do a BBSHD to learn more about mid-drives, but I haven't ruled out hubs completely. If I went hub, I was thinking geared, but if you're talking better braking, do you mean regen on a...

Need advice on fat tadpole trike BBSHD build

Hello ES! I could use your advice. I've been thinking about installing a BBSHD on a Sun Seeker Fat Tad (fat tire tadpole trike) for a long while now, and I keep putting it off. I tend to overanalyze things, and there always seems to be more to learn. Help me pull the trigger by looking this over...

    Amberwolf gratitude thread

I imagine being a moderator is a lot like being a cop, where you spend your days dealing with not only bad people, but good people when they're at their worst. Thank you, Amberwolf, for all you've done over the years to help make ES a better place. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Any vendor that supplies adequate information?

Years ago, I picked one of their kits for my first conversion, mainly because of their instructions and customer support. I didn't want to ask for help, but if I needed it, I wanted to be sure I could get it. I'm sure it's even better now that Dan's involved!

Mongoose dolomite fatbike? 7spd, disk brakes, INEXPENSIVE

Good luck with the Dolomite build! I considered getting one. I got a Beast first, and I was evaluating it, trying to decide whether I wanted to convert it, when the Dolomite came out. I figured picking up a Dolomite would be better than trying to put brakes on the Beast. The Beast has a rear...

Some Questions About E-Bikes as a Primary Mode of Transport

I'm a little late to the party here, but I've seen one or two guys advertise on Craigslist L.A. that do custom conversions as well as selling converted bikes. They might be able to convert one to your specs. I don't know enough about them to recommend anyone. I'd agree with others that for your...

    E-bike speed limits wtf?

The way the regs are set up in California now, I believe 40mph is too fast to be legal for an electric bicycle. Here, you can have a single coaster brake and be legal! An electric bicycle isn't required to have a taillight at night, just reflectors and a wimpy headlight. Not ideal for...

Dogman review- 2013 E-BikeKit direct drive kit - 170 miles

Thanks for the review, Dogman! I got one of these a few weeks ago, but I've only taken it out a couple of times so far. I'm in SoCal and not planning on running it in the rain, but it's good to know I can if I want to, and I'm glad to hear it handles hills well. Here's a little about my...

Another benefit of moto wheels on ebikes

Of course! Makes sense. And with disc brakes, you don't need to worry about clearing rim brakes. Sorry about my noobiness. I don't know much about bicycle parts and not much more about motorcycle parts. So, it looks like you had no trouble clearing your forks and frame. If I were considering a...

Another benefit of moto wheels on ebikes

This is good to know, but is it difficult to mount motorcycle rims on a bicycle frame and fork? Is much fabrication necessary? I assume you're not talking about lacing motorcycle rims onto bicycle hubs. I'd imagine it's tough finding rims narrow enough for a bicycle frame and fork. You must be...

    E-Vehicle test drives (Santa Monica)

I also recommend. I've been to 2 or 3 of the 4 they've held. Not sure if I'll be able to make it this year. Oh, it's free, but parking is $9! Don't remember if there was close street parking. Bicycle parking might have been free, but I'm not sure. I think it was mostly car stuff, but I...

    Safe, street-legal 45 mph e-bicycle possible?

Thanks, again, for all the advice. I'm definitely concerned about the safety of such a vehicle. Bad welds, poor geometry, and inadequate suspension are all concerns I had. I'd hate to go down at 40 mph again. My shoulder still isn't fully healed from a lowside on my motorcycle about 6 months...

    Safe, street-legal 45 mph e-bicycle possible?

Thanks for the info, guys. I really should've thought of the VIN! I'm somewhat familiar with SPCNS regs for cars. I'll have to look into what I'd need to do for a bike. Don't know if using a bicycle frame would be a problem, but I hear converting dirt bike frames to street use can be a...

    Safe, street-legal 45 mph e-bicycle possible?

I have a lot of projects I'm considering, and I'm trying to figure out what makes sense and what doesn't. I don't know much about bicycles, and I was hoping people here could help me out. I'd like to build a safe, street-legal, electric bicycle capable of 45 mph. Is this reasonable or would...

    Motorcycle class Hub Motor

I'm pretty sure todayican was talking about a reverse trike (2 front, 1 rear). At least, that's what he's built in the past. I'm interested in this, too. I've been designing a reverse trike for my personal use with a tube frame and swingarm rear. How would a single rear wheel with spokes...
