    I use the handlebar end mirrors and they do a good job. I have had my bike drop over on the mirror side in the garage and the mirror just folded over with no damage. I think they work better on a standard bike, on my BikeE recumbent my shoulder is in the way a little.

    Sure looks like a shorted FET to generate all of that heat. Do you have a fuse between the batteries and the controller? What kind of connector were you using that came apart? A coil discharge from the motor could have created a pretty high inverse voltage spike.

    I use a Soneil 48V 3.5A Constant Current charger and use 30A Anderson powerpole connectors which can't be plugged in backwards. It was expensive but is supposed to do all of the things to extend SLA battery life.
