jonescg's NEW electric racebike BUILD thread!

Hi Chris, Do you know off-hand what the dimensions of that pack are? And did you place the contactors inside the pack? This is probably all posted somewhere but the thread is too long to go back very far! Well, okay, I'm a bit lazy too. :)

"Copper/nickel sandwich" buses for series connections

Does anyone know if the tape inhibits thermal transfer? (ex. to airflow over the surface)

Why do you like the HVIL connectors better than the Anderson's? I've always used Anderson's and have zero experience with the HVIL system.

Chris, have you looked into RTV? I once built a hybrid PV panel that used cells imbedded onto an aluminum plate using RTV. It worked quite well (the idea was that heat generated from the photovoltaic cell was transferred to water which was used to preheat domestic hot water. I can't remember...

Chris, are you going to weld these or ? On the pack I'm working on (two stacks of 30S13P), I split each 30S stack into two sections: 16S and 14S and plan to incorporate a 3/8" polycarbonate spacer between the two sections. I'm welding (kWeld with copper sandwich technique) and using cell...

Current Carrying Capacity in Folded Copper Strips

If a copper strip is folded, is the current capacity changed? Assuming the fold isn't a sharp "crease" in the material, is there any reason to suspect it won't be able to handle as many amps? I'm thinking of soldering a bus bar onto some copper sheet, welding the sheet onto my cells...

So maybe a heavier front wheel would help with that, as well?

That is a good idea, presumably your acceleration will be finished by the time you hit the timed portion. I can't remember if you've posted before on this but what is the relationship between CoP and CoG?

Stunning! Best of luck. Out of curiosity, what is the overhang of the bodywork past the rear tire?

Sounds doable as long as the chain won't hit the tire. Is switching to the narrower wheel an option or does that compromise tire size and mounting too much?

I can't figure out how to embed it, but here's a link to a GS500 sprocket carrier that I was playing with to make the GS500 swingarm and wheel work with a T500 in the T500 frame. You can see holes where we were starting to break through. Ultimately the c/shaft sprocket was shimmed out a bit...

jonescg's NEW electric racebike BUILD thread!

I've machined a sprocket carrier before to move the sprocket back towards centerline. It might be worthwhile picking up a scrap one at the wreckers or evilbay and seeing how much you might gain w/o compromising integrity.

"Copper/nickel sandwich" buses for series connections

300 joules sounds like a lot! I'm using .15 mm for a pack I'm now building using the Molicels; I calculated the thickness based on conduction area known to work (from another application with different batteries). I didn't have to account for uneven current distribution though. If you post a...

jonescg's NEW electric racebike BUILD thread!

Nice update Chris. I'm in the process of (slowly) building a 60S13P battery for my street-legal Hayabusa and land-speed bike using the 2170 format Molicels. I experimented with the cells and welding last year for a 20S5P replacement pack for a friend's scooter with some success. I'm building...

I know the FIM certified them so they must be accurate but my issue with Voxan was that some of the short-distance speeds they submitted were so low that they didn't mesh with the longer distance speeds. Maybe they're going to play the "new record" game by starting out slow and eventually...

    Land Speed Motorcycle

You can buy off-the-shelf components to do that (approx. 400 hp required) and with the slippery bodywork it might even be a bit less. Personally, I've always been a bit suspicious of Voxan's records: they've never been forthcoming with any actual video or run data and the numbers they submitted...

Luke, one of the problems is availability of good pouch cells. At least I've been unable to find them (other than drag race cells which have very high specific power but limited energy). If you have any leads I'd much rather run those but when I started searching a year ago there wasn't a...

    Land Speed Motorcycle

I'm using a kWeld with the copper/nickel "sandwich" technique. I made a test pack last year for a friend's scooter replacing six gel cells with the P42a's and it worked out pretty well: much lighter with more capacity. The 60S pack is being made in four sub-pack groups to ease assembly. I'm...

Thanks guys. That was a 96S4P pack and the bike now has a 50S pack of Enerdels in it. I'm building a 60S pack of 21700's for it as the Enerdels are getting a bit long in the tooth. Actually, there's only one module getting weak but the 2170's are lighter and will have more capacity (the bike...

I hear you Cole - Loring is in my backyard and although I've crewed at B-Ville I'd never make the effort to race there myself. You've got a unique vehicle and it'd be extremely cool to get the Hat in your weight class. :thumb:

FWIW: Lightning went 206 at Mohave in 2015 with an APS (i.e. streamlined tail) fairing. I went 206 at Loring with OEM bodywork in 2016. Best of luck!

That's what I was trying to say, actually. Were they 4.3 "hot off the charger" or after resting a bit? Good luck BTW!
