what amp hour charger would you reccommend for a 10 ah bottle style battery? not concerned about quick charging time but the safest for longetivity of said battery. all advice is greatly appreciated as i am contemplating said purchase and welcome all advice. short trips with level elavation. just tooling around the neighborhood. thank you.
 
Chargers are not (or shouldn't be) rated by Ah. They are rated by A.

VERY important difference.

*Batteries* are rated by Ah, *and* by A.


That said, you'd have to know it's charging rate first. Or failing that, which cells it uses and how many are paralleled, so you can calculate the pack charging rate.

If it uses 1p 10Ah 1C-charge-rate cells, you should use at most a10A charger.

If it uses 10p 1Ah 0.5C-charge rate cells, you should use at most a 5A charger.

If it uses 2p 5Ah 0.1C-charge-rate cells, you should use at most a 1A charger.

So, it depends on what they are for the rate you should charge them at.


Of course you can use any charger you want to, but you could damage the cells and/or shorten their lifespan, if it's too high.
 
thank you amberwolf. it is a cheap bottle batt from bms. not sure of the cells. i was under the impression that 2 amp charger was best for 10 ah batt. thanks again for your time and expertise as i am not very expeirenced in electrical areas. appreciate all the advice.
 
when you buy the battery why not talk them into selling you an extra battery charger at the same time? the nice thing about the kingpan type charger is that you can adjust the output voltage exactly to match your BMS balance voltage.
 
36 volt 10ah. thanks lester like your allcell batts. have been told in the past not to use more than 2 a charger for a 10ah batt correct? not worried about speedy charging as batt longetivity is of utmost importance. thanks all. :D
 
The rate of charge has a very small impact on the longevity of the battery (provided you charge below the recommended charge rate - charging above it, or to too high a voltage does severely impact the longevity of the battery). The biggest contributors to loss of battery capacity/ability to provide current are:

Time
Temperature

In that order.

Keep the battery cool (fridge, not freezer) when not in use, and you'll probably get a better life out of it.
 
i was thinking some more and maybe you could offer to buy more junk if they gave a good deal on the second charger. if they had other stuff you needed. but shipping from BMSbattery is the pits because of the expense and now it looks like surface shipping is gonna cease too with the longshoremen going on strike. i could not believe the $147k wages and completely free benefits. no wonder they control it like the mafia.
 
You should charge it at 0.2C, which means a 2A charger. They normally supply a 2.5A charger with that battery, but ifvyou want long life, the 2A one would be better.

Those batteries are not waterproof. You have to cover it if you want to use it or park it in the rain.
 
I wouldn't hesitate to charge with a 3 amps charger, which in all likelihood doesn't actually put out 3 real world amps.

A cheap wattmeter from ebay is the way to know exactly what is going on, what amps and volts your charger puts out.
