I want to share my commuting/fun bike build. It picked up a 2009 Fuji Tahoe Comp 29er with a medium from Craigslist with the intention of an eMTB conversion. I originally had an Ozark Trail Ridge running this motor, but I punctured the frame by not having a spacer between the motor and the frame.

I was limited on choices because I wanted to use both my ToSeven DM-01 with torque sensing and the 60V 25Ah triangle battery (Samsung 35E cells). The motor requires a rear triangle that lets it not position the chainring too far out, resulting in a terrible chainline. Since the initial conversion, and one torque sensor failure, I've made more upgrades to the bike.

I've posted some of this in random threads here and there, but I figured that it makes more sense to have one consolidated build thread.

Bringing the bike home.

The bike was mostly stock spec except for a PNW dropper post. SRAM X5 derailleur and shifter, Avid cable disc brakes.

The chainline is much better than it was on the OTR build. I need a chainring with more of an offset dish as I have an additional 12mm available before it's too close to the chainstay... like the 42 tooth that came with the Tongsheng TSDZ8 that I have on my workbench.

I did not want to puncture another frame, so I made a spacer/brace out of JB Weld and used grease on the surface to prevent it from bonding to the frame or motor.

The initial build was fun, but most of the components on the bike were worn and not really up to the task of handling the 1000W DM-01 with the exception of the Avid disc brakes, which seems to work well enough.

So many settings to play with.

I eventually had a torque sensor failure, so my motor was replaced. After a small hiatus, I started making upgrades again.

I upgraded to a Shimano Cues cues setup with RD-U8000 derailleur, SL-U8000-11R Shifter, CS-LG700-11 Cassette, and CN-LG500 chain. I also ditched the Rockshox Dart 3 with 28 mm stanchions for a spare Suntour XCT30 with 30 mm stanchions. The ride is so much more stable at speed and enjoyable, I'd have to measure to see if the Suntour fork has less off offset at the crown and more at the wheel, but it looks like it. I also swapped on the wheels from my Ozark Trail Ridge since the hubs and tires were in such better shape (new). The bike feels amazing. The lack of rebound on the Suntour is irritating, but I may swap in a Wolftooth GeoShift 2 degree headset with a Rockshox Recon when I have more money to burn. The Avid brakes, while serviceable, were replaced with Shimano MT200 hydraulic brakes.

After swapping from a 90 mm stem to a 60 mm unit.

More to come.

Nice write up so far! I must say the idea to use jb weld + the grease is one of the smartest things I've seen done before for these mid drive conversions. I ended up sticking one of those felt pads for the bottom of chairs to protect the hardwood plus a folded piece of innertube for my bike. But your solution is way more ideal with the pressure distribution and looks really good. Shame that the Ozark trail ridge got destroyed though as it does look like the better suited frame. And I do like my walmart bikes, my bbshd is built around a schwinn axum. That shimano cues groupset looks to be really good value although I do wonder if you really need the 11 speeds though with the 60v dm01 power! I did want to mention as someone who also has / had the mt200 set you can swap the levers for deores. This will give you servo wave for more power and the better lever design. I think I paid under $60 for the two and I really liked the difference they made, and super easy swap over

Good info, thanks for the tips! I think you can use the 9 speed cassette instead of the 11, I just happened to get a good deal on a combo. I could probably only have 3 gears 😂. If I recall correctly, a selling point of Cues is the same pull ratio and high compatibility along with Linkglide shifting.

I installed Ibera waterproof panniers with their quick release rack. This makes my 40 mile round trip work commute much nicer.

I ditched the SR Suntour XCT30 coil fork for a Manitou Machete Comp with ABS+, and that has been an excellent upgrade. This bike is a blast to ride.

Not much to update...I replaced the Selle Royal saddle with a WTB Volt. I can finally stop buying new saddles lol. I'm about to hit 700 miles on this motor, and I will keep posting updates about its performance as the miles rack up.
