Hi folks,

I am about to buy a dirt cheap European Tesla Model S 85 from 2014 with 220,000km. So the car is far from having any warranty (minus the rust warranty that should still be good for 2 years) so I am not worried of voiding the warranty. It has lifetime supercharging and looks good so far. Comes from Norway (I am in Latvia).

The car seems to be mostly 0km range - but sometimes jumps to 200km range (the battery isn't full) when it stands around - says the owner.

Obviously one of the 16 modules seems to be defect. He provided me with the two attached pics and said something about "overvoltage".

Some folks said it might be water in the battery pack? Or a "pyro fuse"?

Before having my (unauthorized) Tesla service swapping the entire module I would like to inform myself. I have a basic understanding of Lithium Ion batteries but am far from an expert. I have no experience with Teslas or their traction batteries other than owning a Model S 60 from 2013.

Could the battery problem be cured with some balancing of the module? Would this induce some discharging/charging cycles of said module (and then the module's BMS doing the balancing)? I guess the battery pack has to go out for that, right?

Can one or a few of the 444 Panasonic cells in the module be replaced?

Any other insights?

I am just trying to sound halfway "informed" when meeting with the Tesla garage. They have repaired many Tesla batteries - seemingly mostly by swapping modules. Would be sad if the swap a module if a far more cheaper or easier solution would do the trick.

Thank you very much for your input and wisdom. Waiting for magic tricks and hacks.
