40 mph club

Just made the 40 mph club this evening.

P1.40mphClub.jpg

The top CA is for the trailer which I disconnected for the speed test. The bottom is for the FWD. Earlier in the week I swapped out the 9C 2806 FH and EBikes.CA (highly-modified) 6FET controller. The MaxS on a flat that I could truly believe and not related to tire-slip was about 35 mph on level grade.

The new configuration is the EBikeKit FH Disc that we think is a 9x7 but were not quite sure. It definitly contributes more in the bottom-end and the Regen is higher than my last hub. I have a pair of Lyen 12FET 4110 controllers; Primary runs the front hub, and the Secondary is slaved to run the Trailer when attached. I haven't tested the top-speed of the bike and trailer - which sports the RH disc version of the new front hub. Since the freewheel of either motor is about the same 52-54 mph, I would expect that a tandem operation wouldn't break into the 50 mph bracket, though it does climb hills well :)

Enjoy, KF

Well I joined the club after the EV show in Portlandia today. Cleaned up the bike, added 20lbs pressure to the tires, balanced the new 66V pac of a123s, 72V+ fully charged, and ran down to Marine Drive along the Columbia river since it has recently been paved, is level and not busy with traffic all the time. There was a slight headwind but the BMC V2S with an extra wire on each of the phase wires and Infineon 72V 40A Lyen controller made it anyway. I was tucked in good holding the handlebars near the stem and way down near the bars with my head. Just used my speedo as I checked it against my Garman GPS and found it to be within .4 at 37mph a few months back. I have a radar gun but really don't feel the need.

And here is the way I got there.

Giant Trance3 BMC 600 V2S with upgraded phase wires and a123 M1 batts. Controller used is an Infineon 12 Fet 72V 40A by Lyen

48V 29-30MPH
52V 34-35
60V 37-38
66V 39-40

congrats biohazardman ande all who have hit or exeeded that magical number
doctorbass you are in a league all your own
some on here are on the cutting edge of ebike performance

If I, at 270lbs, can make the 40nph club, which I easily have, it isn't that hard to do. See sig.

having the equipment to do it is 1 thing having the balls to run it at 40 is another
there is probably only 10 percent running this speed
you say easy i say if that was so most would be here

Been hitting 42MPH on my commute back home. This is with 22s Lipo, Lyen sensorless controller and a Magic Pie motor.

A lot of us in the club just haven't said that we are.

With a proper bike for higher speeds then it doesn't take balls at all, but 99% of the bikes here aren't. To me the odd 9% are more stupid than ballsy.

Completely agreed with people's setup to do 40mph. Just make sure you have the correct setup to do 40mph and most importantly find roads that will let you do 40mph. I wouldn't do 40mph in inner streets though. Just slow down for cops, intersections, people, potholes, rough roads, etc. Common sense stuff. Do 40mph only when you know you can do 40mph safely. No need to have balls to do it.

I passed the 40mph the first day of my first build, and wanted more already. With a good FS bike, I find that 50mph is a nice speed to ride and you need close to 60 to properly ride 50.

I built my bike to be my main mode of transportation, around the city, it had to conquer the hills of the area it goes 40 because of that. The top speed was not an intentional thing but a byproduct of the main purpose of the build. The test will likely be the only time I go that fast. I had a weak moment and just had to know how fast it would go. I normally do near 18-20MPH unless I am going down a steep hill of which there are several in my area I go over regularly. Do my best to stay within the legal limits and follow the laws the best I can but with HCV, several disabilities, the beating near to death I took a few months back and the age thing I need help or I won't be riding much. Driving is not always an option cuz of the above.

Going 40 MPH isnt all that its cracked up to be. Just drop on 100V of battery and a 100V controller, and you have a 40 MPH bike.

And then when you hit a nasty pothole at 40something, you tend to destroy things.

I never had this issue at 20 MPH.

I passed a speed monitor on the street and it said 43mph wow. And I posted it here. Then I got a C.A. and found out it was just 34mph. That monitor was wrong ?

I'm in the daily 80mph bicycle club. :)

It's a lonely club! Come join me!

...I've been pondering dropping some IRFB4115's in the 12 FET Infenion and another 12S2P string of Turnigy's. The motor is clearly begging for more power, the windings are only lightly charred!

That would only push me into the 70 MPH club, however. 80's are tricky with a low speed hub motor, and probably quite dangerous given my total lack of proper riding gear.

I've done 70mph down a big hill on my road bike, sprinting like a sewing machine, drafting my friend's Geo Tracker. I was sort of catching air every time I hit a crack in the pavement. That was when I was 17. It was damn fun, and felt pretty stable until I moved into the wind which felt like a wave of water, or as if I suddenly was riding on molasses. This is on an 18lb bike with 120psi 1" tires. It was likely the most fun I've ever had, period.

Today I hit about 40mph on the ebike coasting down a hill. It was fun, smooth enough that the rigid mtn bike did fine. I really think ebikes should be full suspension though. Even at 12mph on the concrete trail, it's bumpy and it sucks. My next ebike will be a full suspension with a MAC motor likely.

Yesterday I sprinted my road bike down a nice hill, hit 52mph. It was fun, I like going above 50.

Some of us are old enough to be a bit more sane than in our younger years although 80 does still sound fun. We might crash and die you would just get a few scratches and get back to it. ;^) Stable as it is I'll leave it as is for awhile myself.

Finally, a target worthy of loading up more voltage. I may have to go down to that beach road to find a flat enough stretch, but at least that will void the "But John you hit that number at almost a mile high, which is a big advantage over sea level with the thin air.

BTW, what are you doing that on? I thought you sold Pinky to someone in Asia. :?:

Im honestly thinking of running the 5303 again at 15s ... that solidly puts you at 40mph... 18s puts you at a solid 45mph

I always thought that giving up on the 5303 to go back to the 9C was a huge step backward for you. What you need is a proper controller. That said, another part of me wants to put you on one of those mobility scooters so you don't hurt yourself again. LOL.

This needs to be a quotable quotes.

I already said on the FB page that when Im 70 im going to have a kick ass scooter...Etek based lol
