Hey, what mixing software do you use? I've played around with Finale before, but it can be difficult to work with. Need to find a really high quality instrument library, too. :?

I checked out Finale and it seems like a serious musician's tool. I'm no musician in the conventional sense of the title, but I do consider myself a DJ/artist that happens to be intestinally musical.

I stopped buying vinyl long ago and currently DJing with MP3 burned to CD, but I still I haven't gotten into DJ software. If that's what you want to get into a DJ buddy of mine swears by "Serato Scratch" which you can manipulate MP3 files on a laptop using turntables and digitally encoded vinyl.

I still have (and use) my pair of THEE legendary Technic SL1200 turntables but crossed over to the digital realm with a pair of Pioneer DJ100S CD decks. They're affordable, reliable, and not too complicated.

But if your interested in software synthesizers, I highly recommend these freeware for Windows.

And Garageband is a great gateway software for noobies. It comes with Mac OSX and very decent for beginners. Not sure if available for Windows.

I used to play piano/keyboard a lot (like when I was around 3-12). Then my dad got a pretty capable keyboard. I wasn't into it enough to really do much with it (though it did have MIDI interface capability), and I think it's been gone for a few years. There is a (very) old organ/keyboard thing that my grandma has, but the sounds it makes are an assault to my ears. 25 year old electronics and all .

When I got a job, I started saving some cash for stuff. A lot of that got spent on ebike stuff, but I've been keeping/saving some for a keyboard. Originally, I was going to look for a very capable (read: pricey) keyboard. Like a really nice one that was MIDI, stand alone, full size, weighted keys, etc., but I don't think I'll be able to wait that long. I'll probably run out somewhere this weekend and grab a MIDI only keyboard for cheap (mebbe see if I can find a copy of SSBB while I'm out...).

Figure I'd try and come up with a few pieces. Makes a good hobby.

As far as I can tell, it is. It's kind of a pain to use for actually mixing music, though that might just be me. It's made rather harder by the fact that I can't read music ( ). Most of the program is centered on the sheet music thing, and I don't have a clue what all but a few of the symbols mean. Though with the HyperScribe thing (needs a MIDI keyboard), I would imagine it would be quite a bit easier to use. Still gonna try out a few programs, though.

I did a few pieces years ago using Reason. I can't play any musical instruments, but with Reason, I can program the sequencer to play all the notes for me. Seems most of my files were lost after a computer crash. I'll have to dig around and see if I can find some of the songs.

That stuff is fun, but very time consuming. I haven't had time to play with it for quite a while.

That's how I've been using Finale. You put notes on the staff and it plays them back for you. I'm pretty okay on the keyboard, but I can make stuff that sounds like Bach doing it that way .

ANYWAY: I got that Buzz thing DJ linked too. Nice piece of software, that. Easy to use, save for figuring out how to make what sound you want. Eep!

Made this really weird remix of Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams". Did not turn out like I originally intended, but it's okay. I don't have anywhere to upload it, so it went to YouTube, which dumbed down the audio. Sounds better in an MP3 or fresh off the synth.

I can't believe I actually made a song with the word "thug" in the title.

Can't say I've listened to much Techno or clubbing music but have heard our kids listening to it often.I've even caught myself thumping my foot to it sometimes.

I grew up with The Beatles,The Stones,The Doors,Zeppelin,Pink Floyd and the like.

For the past long while my heart has gone with the blues and enjoy Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee,Muddy Waters,Johnny Lee Hooker,Johnny Winter and good ol' Hank Williams.Some may consider good ol' Hank "old country" but I'd consider him a bluesman.

In my early 20's a bunch of us friends used to get together on Fridays or Saturdays with a few cases of beer a big bottle of rye and some of them extra curricular cigarettes.After dipping into the mix the guitars,harmonicas and spoons would come out and we would wail away for the rest of the night.On occasion someone would bring a cassette recorder and tape the whole thing.After sobering up and taking a listen to the tape the next day it surprisingly didn't sound all that bad...Ahhhhhhhhh the good old days...

Interesting take on Sweet Dreams, "who am to disagree". :wink: I couldn't have done better. Buzzmachines is loads of fun, but yeah, trying to get the right notes is a task. It's a "tracker". You'll be better off with Garageband, then graduate to Logic. Logic Express is what I use. With keyboards, weighted keys would be good for natural sounds. But for electronic music, a cheap midi keyboard controller would get you by but make sure you get lots of programable sliders, knobs and buttons.

Eric_G, I've been playing lots of rock lately. So far the only blues tune I ever played is Bob Seger but I'll check out your list of artists. I'm open to lots of music. Got some old rock mixes you might like. I'll play it whenever I get the chance.

Last night I was going through my record collection to see what gets chucked (to make room for my new powertools http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3035&p=53556#p53556) and found "The B52's" album. So I put it on and continued my spring cleaning and was reminded how much I love that certain B-52's BOUNCE . That BOUNCE, on the right dancefloor sound system, is so wicked.

At that moment, I wondered if they're still making music. I stopped what I was doing and googled them. Oh WOW! Their new album came out the very same day, March 25, 2008 ! ? ! ? 1 ? 1 ? 1

Yeah,there's something about a vinyl record that a cd can't produce,don't know what it is but vinyl sounds better...

Its a real shame because of the ease at which a cheap circuit can be added to a radio to compress the original loudness to car style, but you cannot go the other way.

Anyways at Xmas my parents got me a set of rather good computer speakers with a sub thing since the hard drive I was using as speaker before was kinda shitty. The sound of of these things is incredible, I've put the SBlive back in my computer and noticed less noise, just wow! These beat even the headphones I was sometimes using. Stuff sounded balanced on the headphones, whereas the speakers have a little spike in the low end just before the sub kicks in. But I can hear more sonic detail with them, especially when listening for effects and minor bits of timbre. But also the way 128K mp3 really suck, and how most modern music just sounds flat, it has no details to be heard. Maybe they're just using some sort of lowest-common-denominator system as a reality check to make sure it sounds good on shitty speakers or mp3players, I dunno. Listening to someone who's pretty good play a guitar, sometimes gives me a sorta musical orgasm thing, but this "music" sounds more like noise... Bleh! And then they blame loss of sales on piracy... Even for free, do not want.

When I used to download music I always looked for stuff with a 320 bitrate or flac files.anything less than 256bitrate sounds hollow,to me anyway.It took me a long long time to buy a cd player.Heck I still have the three turntables I bought many years ago.A Taya (belt drive) a Nikko (direct drive) and a Rega (also a belt drive with a glass platter). I still have an old vacuum tube Olsen receiver from the early 60's and it still works like a charm.I now use a Technics class H amplifier/reciever powering two older Ess Temptess Speakers that have Heil Air motion transformers for tweeters.He He I blew the woofers in these and replaced them with a couple of Cambridge woofers.

Music is good for the soul...

Got a Harmon-Kardon AVR 645 amp , velodyne CHT 10" sub, 2 x Bose AM-5 's ( front and rear ) and a polk audio centre..

The speakers.. do not do the Amp justice... i need some B&W 's..

Listening to something with quality sound.. and then on the computer speakers.. is like night and day.

I can play the home stereo so loud it makes things move on the coffee table, but won't hurt your ears.. everything set to neutral.. no extra treble.. no extra bass.. and i can sit there and listen to tunes for hours sometimes..

I agree. music is good for the soul.

I've got a modern pioneer amp and Paradigm L+R speakers, polk center/surrounds, JL subs.. thats off the far end of the diminishing returns curve for these ears. I don't have any issues with solid state amps or cd's, or even mp3. Can sound as good or bad as anything else. Its only the over compression and screwing with the dynamic range that bugs me.

Ya Know,in all these years I've yet to listen to 5.1 surround sound anything.I've just not had the opportunity to do so as of yet.I do remember in the 70's when Quadraphonic stereos had come out,a friend had bought one and it was rather neat to listen to.For some reason or another those systems went the way of the 8 track tape players....Gotta give a listen to some 5.1 surround though.
