I was considering giving his kit a try and just replacing the controller with a lyen right from the start and a 48 volt/20a/H lifepo4. This would be used by my spouse for commuting on road surfaces.

Wouldn't be surprised if it's the same kit. Haven't seen complaints about xcceries' or yescomusa's controllers or motors (maybe one but it was a RMA return shipping reimbursement issue). wesnewell is a member here who's an exponent of them. Also mcintyretj has written long-term reports on his motor kits from yescomusa.

The newer (solid black) model comes with a 19mm rim while the older (striped) model comes with a 25mm rim. Older model comes with a 30A controller and newer model with a 26A controller per reports. I replaced the 25mm rim with a 32mm rim. I can't imagine tires over 2" on 19mm rims even though they will fit. So if you don't have disk brakes, I'd get the older model. If you're going to use the supplied 1.75" tire it doesn't matter. More info on old models;

Thank you...may main concern is the controller not holding up . Are there any threads that discuss making these stock controllers more " beefy" ? I have a soldering iron and can solder quite well, but im not a pro when dealing with electronics.

The biggest problem is that it's front wheel kit.

I own a rear wheel kit now..same specs as this one..

is a front wheel kit really that bad for travelling flat road surfaces ?

I have the rear kit version of the one mark5 posted a link to, I've had it for almost 6 months and haven't had a single problem! The wheel is still true and no flats yet! I would definitely recommend you go with the kit that has the LCD display vs. the LED display, and it also has PAS. I have actually been using mine as a pedal assist only, but I have the throttle installed and it only takes a few seconds to plug in! Mine is powered by 3 5s LIPO batteries in series @ 4.5aH (63 Volts FOC). I mainly use mine to commute to work and back home which is around 5 miles each way; I also take my son to daycare sometimes which will add another 2 miles. I rarely need to take it above assist level 3 for my terrain, but I have a little fun in level 5 at times!

Front wheel drive - no problem on good surfaces. I can't tell which wheel drives on mine and I ride a *lot* of motorcycle miles.

I believe this is the kit used for the pre built bike I bought. Controller is solid for 48v lifepo4, never had problems with it
