Rob, be sure to read through that long Aprilia thread I linked to, before you pull the gearbox down.
It's not just a simple gearbox, it has multiple sets of bevel planet gears and freewheels etc in there.
It can be a little tricky to get it all back together correctly until you understand its function.
You can grease the primary motor drive gears by just removing the motor and the primary pinion set, without cracking the main gear case.
Do not let the motor end cap come off though...or another struggle with brushes will amuse you.
