i can convinve the misses to get me one so i can build and fix things around the house. SHe liked that idea so i have a birthday present.

HAHA that-a-boy top effort there...truthfully though you will find that when you have a welder there is
many a job around the house that can be tackled ! Very handy tool to have for sure

About 8 years ago i welded 2 bits of steal with an arc then another to with a mig thats as fas as my welding expierence goes. But only 1 way to learn.

Man...i wish more thought like this, soooo many times i have heard from people reading my worklogs "i wish i could do that" fact is you can, all it takes is a little effort/time/practise Wedling well enough to tackle a custom frame
isn't a steep learning curve IMO, and even easier these days with the internet and YouTube, search up welding tips
on youtube and you will learn all you need to know in 30 minutes and be ready to start practising...all about right heat settings and wire feed rate..not difficult, practise on scrap get it set right then tackle the job at hand, all about 'pushing the puddle'

One more 'tip' head to Freakbike nation in the forum stickies you will see bicyle frame jigs, you WILL need to build on of
these if you hope to get the frames you build straight/square etc, cost very little and will give you some good practise welding too! Any thing you think i might be able to assist with let me know, i like to help those that are trying to help themselves :)

HELL YES grab the stingray if only for the rear rim/hub cost me a PACKET to get rims from USA
to Austrlaia they are only about 30 bucks for rim and same for tire but the freight is an absolute rip
i paid up near 400 dollars to get two rims and two tires when the Aussie dollar was in the toilet.
I would pay 50 bucks for 20x4.25in wheel alone...if you could get them both for under 100 bucks
would be good, but bargain with the seller he wouldnt know what they are worth might give you the lot for 50 bucks!

The other bike is a Jesse James West Coast chopper i seen a few of these modded on the moterbike and also
RatRod bike forums they come up quite nice, they are both kids bikes though so if your
tall you will be cramped. Bottom brackets head tubes and triple tree forks could all be used in
a custom build though i would snap them up as quick as i could get my wallet out!

Soz mate i just edit my post you snuck in before me haha as i edit above i would pay 50
for the rear wheel alone on the chopper its a bargain, you don't get them here often
they used to be sold in Kmart or Target ~10 years ago in OZ but they are scarce these days i dont think they even make them in the US anymore and Alan from ChoppersUS has said to me he only gets the 20x4.25 rims when he gets in a schwin chopper, he parts it out. If you want a 20x4.25 cheap, thats a bargain IMO Your lookin near ~$US90 bucks (a wheel rim +hub+tire) US for them new PLUS freight, that would be another 40 bucks easy.

I didnt realise you were using one of those cheap ebay welders Kim, I've been eyeing those off myself and wondering how good they are. I suppose any welder is largely just a big transformer hey ?

I've seen the stingrays go for as little as $50 and considering that one isn't in ride away condition (not that it matters to you) I'd offer that. The rear wheel alone would be worth that for a custom build.

edit: beaten by aussie jester. haha
Kim do you know if you can fit motor bike tyres on those rims ?
Others have mentioned fitting motor bike tyres on 20" rims and they seem plenty wide enough to accomodate a nice fatty

Last bike is HUUUUGELY overpriced, frame with crank and fork is only $US139 new!

While your on that site checkout this frame

Have seen a neat trike built based on this frame and a set of wide rims and tires on
freakbikenation forum...extra panels have been welded in.

Hyena...there is a lil more to welders than the transformer but yes it is the main part of them for sure...
From what i have heard the china made chepo welders are a bit hit and miss, seems i got lucky with mine i guess.
Its no lincoln though big difference in performance when using one then the other as i found out when mate picked his Lincoln up and bought it around for me to change the lining on, much smoother operation makes it easier to weld with results in a neater weld with less effort. For hobbyist on a budget though the china made welders are up to the task IMO.

? how do you get away with it using a non hub motor like that 1500 watt one you linked me before

i have run 130amp plus through my rc motor thing doesnt even get hot just warm.. I know Matt.P with his 1000watt
cyclone he has a limit of 75amp now (due to the controller) and the motor handles it heat free, could easily do alot more i think...
