Hey all!
I borrowed an ebike from a friend that was in storage for several years. I don’t know the status of the battery during storage. It’s currently my primary mode of transportation for a month or two (and maybe forever if I really like it, which I do!) while my car was stolen and is now in the shop.
On Sunday I got the bike, charged it up (charger showed red when charging and then green maybe 20 mins later so I unplugged it) and I’ve ridden about 30 miles on it. Now the battery says it’s at 50% and I’m trying to charge it and am unsuccessful. The charger light stays green. I left it on the charger for about an hour and it battery charge percentage hasn’t gone up.
I know this might indicate that the BMS is preventing charge because one of the battery cells is in a dangerous level, but im hoping this is not the case, since the battery is currently discharging at an expected rate. Am I being too optimistic here? If I have to replace the battery that’s too expensive of a fix for me, I’ll have to give it back to my friend. But if the problem is the charger, that’s a much more reasonably priced fix.
My plan was to test the battery voltage and see if it’s at a level that indicates “good”. The sticker on the battery says 48V 14A 350W. What kind of voltage would indicate the battery is bad? If one of the cells is bad, is the battery a total loss? Could I remove that cell and carry on?
I was also going to try to test the charger. I’ve heard there might be a fuse in there that could potentially be reset.
Edit: I guess I should also ask, is there a harm in leaving the battery on the charger for a few more hours or overnight to see if it fixes itself? Like it said before, this bike is my primary mode of transportation so I’d really like to try everything I can while waiting for a replacement charger to come in.
