The first time I built an electric bike, I used chain drive and my ratio was inadequate...

I really liked the way I mounted my motor though, and I've been thinking about more ways to drive the back wheel.
Then I saw this gasoline motor kit..

And it turns out that they sell the belts, sprockets, "drive rings", etc. separately as well as whole kits.

I am going to inquire what type of belt they are using, and see if it is practical to replace my #25 sprocket with one for that type of belt. It shouldn't be too hard, what's more I might have to over-volt my motor because the gear ratio might be TOO generous :D

lashout/curry made a 4.? to 1 plantary gear box that would bolt onto a "D" shaft motor, that looks like yours, that used a #25 chain.

And if you want *just* the planetary, All-Electronics.com has that very one for cheap.

They're very small. There is a thread around here on ES someplace discussing some of the properties of it, and where to get things like parts to mate two of them in series for 16:1 reductions, etc. Matex, I think it was.

Another place you might look for rear belt and chain drive info is to search google for Eric Peltzer's Ebike pages.

I did look into reduction transmissions at one time, but I would like to keep my set-up simple and have a honkin' huge sprocket on my back tire, somewhat like the first motorcycles.

That's what I'm after in looks, on a budget of course. And with less chance of dying.
