I've been running some numbers on Ebikecalc (programmed by swbluto) comparing hub motors to non-hub motors and was wondering what the advantages are to have a non-hub motor. It doesn't show any benefits as compared to my bl36. I ordered this motor:

to be used in conjunction with the 12 tooth pinion and pulley system (1:17 reduction) from these guys:

The other components in my system are: cc hv110 controller, ping 36v 20ah battery, 26" mountain bike. My question is: what benefits would I gain with this setup in range and top speed as compared to my current bl36 hub motor?

Advantages of non-hub motors, generally.

- Faster motor speed means lighter motor for the same power.

- Possibility to use variable gearing in order to get away with a less powerful motor OR to operate a motor more efficiently at lower speeds.

- Less weight in the wheel is less mass to accelerate.

- Less weight in the wheel is less unsuspended weight in a suspended system or a more distributed impact for an unsuspended one.

- Control over speed without resorting to dangerously high voltages.

- Can be easier to remove back wheel (depends on system used).
