OK, so maybe my standards of expectations are high...yup, they are.

Hit a MAJOR new pothole on the way to work today (in the dark) and taco'd my (China kit double walled Supermagnificent brand or whatever it is) rim and rack (yes, you guys were right, buy steel or overbuilt racks) rated for 35kg..battery is only 5.5 of course. Yeah, of course this was on a 30+ mph section of my commute. If it makes you guys that provided me with the advice to go big on racks, my taint really felt it and I knew damage had been done. Spokes began to TING, but I kept riding. Made it another 25 miles no problem (long day) and had to loosen my rear brakes so they didn't rub.

I can provide pretty pics later if requested.

So anyway, major pothole. Any suggestions on bombproof rims for replacement? I mean like the strongest of the strongest, and I work down from the cost-justification standpoint.

Alex DM24 would be a good start. If you had a disk or drum brake, you could move up to a SR MTX33, but those are heavy as heck and not rim brake compatible.

A lot of your problem might have been that skinny little tire. The good news is the crappy Chinese rim bent easy so you didn't end up with a pinch flat.

30 mph into a BIG (?) pothole...something has to give.
Without seeing the actual hole etc ..I suspect that your rim did pretty good under those circumstances.
You were lucky not to burst the tyre.
Suspension helps a lot to lessen the impact forces, and less wheel weight ( no hub motor ?) even more .
Fat tyres and super soft suspension is your best bet.
.....oh !...and avoid hitting pot holes ! IE ride within your sight and reaction limits .

The angles of the pics are strange, but tire is a 1.95 I am trying to wear out, I am hoping a 2.125 hookworm or similar slick will fit in my frame. I think that's what saved me from worse damage for sure. Yes, I know I shouldn't go that fast but it's hard to resist sometimes when you know you have enough battery.

Thanks for the rim suggestions, I know nothing is impervious to damage, but this gives me a good start.

Going to try straightening it myself, and see how it turns out.

Edit: Oops- meant to post this in E-Bike General Discussion

Edit- straightened it by removing 4 spokes in the affected area, straightened the lip with a crescent wrench and the flat spot with a rubber mallet. It is better, but will never be true again. Got it pretty close, so we shall see how long it holds together.
