Best 12v 12ah sla battery in Oz and where to buy?
Need some new batts for the moped the current ones are 3 years old and totally worn out, I knew they were tired but todays ride showed just how tired they were.
Does the brand of battery make a lot of difference or should I just go and buy some cheapo jump starter packs?

Another possibility is to go to 18ah DiaMec batteries, it would be a pain fitting them but they would cope with the discharge rate better, worth considering?
Heres the specs on the 18AH batteries:
18.0 Amp Hour 12V Sealed Lead Acid Battery

SLA- Size 181(L) x 76(D) x 167(H)mm- Charge current 1.8A for 10- 14 hours- Discharge current 20hr rate 900mACapacity:- 20hr rate (0.90A) 18.0Ah- 10hr rate (1.72A) 17.2Ah- 5hr rate (3.05A) 15.2Ah- 1hr rate (10.8A) 10.8Ah- Int Resistance: Fully charged (20°C,68°F) 15m Ohm- Max Discharge Current (5 sec):100A- Constant Voltage Charge: Initial charging current < 6.4ACycle:- Voltage 14.40V~15.00V @ 20°C (68°F)- Temp Coefficient: - 30mV/°CStandby:- Voltage 13.5V~13.80V @ 20°C (68°F)- Temp Coefficient: - 20mV/°C- Nuts & Bolts Supplied

The other plus with these is that I get a discount through work and will probally get 3 for $100 au. or so.

i'd probably wait for a sale on the jump start packs.

Autobarn had one on the 17ah (900amp) packs recently - $49.99 each, they have sales regularly too. (between them and supercheap, repco etc)

i can't comment on durability of them though, as i've only discharged them 3 times, and barely to 50% capacity.

I was looking at the Autobarn catalogue and they've got 12Ah (600amp) jump starters for $40 if you want a lighter solution, otherwise I'd be inclined to find 17Ah (900amp) packs for $10 more.

I just checked the specs of the B&B batteries and it looks like the 18 ah battery I am looking at rivals their 17ah batteries discharge specs on paper except for maximum 5 sec rating. (it should never see more than ~26 amp and that for short periods only)
And they come with a 12 month warranty so I think I will go that way.
Appreciate the tips on the sales, the main reason for the larger battery is to try and limit the depth of discharge per ride, as the poor scooter has to climb a lot every ride.

no problemo :)

Are the Diamec batteries AGM? I've got a mate who made a trike and his batteries were just standard SLA's out of something (can't remember what, but I know the batteries were practically new) and they died pretty quick. Probably from abuse though.

They don't state it but the discharge ratings and this statement from their site on construction would seem to indicate it.

"Separator
The glass-fiber separator in DiaMec SLA battery are made with advanced technology - This high porosity of the separators retains adequate electrolyte for the reaction with active material of the plates."

Well that seems to confirm it. That's a terrific price you can get so just go with those then. Damn, 3 of these batteries are gonna be heavy.
