Presuming burgers =
chicken burgers too… 8)
I think the very best chicken burger I ever had was at a little barn-shop on the side of the road halfway between Austin and Shiner in Texas during the fall of 1991. I woz on the hunt to visit the
Spoetzl Brewery (makers of Shiner Bock) and a friend told me of this awesome place to eat beside a three-way intersection, and I thought I’d give it a try.
Pull up and parked. There were simple tables outside and in; I sat inside cos of the sun, woz cooler there too. Waitress comes over and I order up this chicken burger for like $6.50. Comes with fries so I order a Coke and waited. And waited. And waited. One half hour goes by and still not lunch. WTF! It’s not a big place and they were not super-busy. At 40 minutes I was certain they had killed a fresh chicken, plucked it, then par-boiled it before roasting. What could possibly be taking so long to prepare a simple chicken burger, I could not fathom. At 50 minutes I was about to leave when comes the lady with a “Texas-sized dinner plate”.
I had never see a chicken breast so large in my life!

Easily exceeding 2 pounds, this fillet had been slowly BBQ’d outside over mesquite and truly had a mouthwatering aroma laying there broaching all corners of the giant-sized, no – make that
Texas-sized bun beneath. The fixens and fries were equally generous. About the only thing small (in comparison) was the 16-oz. bottle of Coke; though it had a Texas-sized straw hanging out the neck.
It was a heavenly eating experience; I nearly needed an ox-cart to carry me away from the table. A few weeks later my buddy and I took our GFs to Port Aransas for a 3-day weekend, and we had lunch at that fantastic hole-in-the-wall again. Like my pal said, it was really awesome. 8)
I’m looking at the map and damned if I can’t find that intersection, though I think it was on Hwy 95 between Smithville and Flatonia.
There has been no equal burger since, though perhaps many distant seconds.
I’ll have that with a Shiner please.
