BTW you can get a single led headlight for less than 10$ :D

Unless I'm reading it wrong, you get the light and the charger for $10, but no battery? Would make sense to buy like that if you're running off a DC-DC converter from the main battery, but otherwise, you'll still need to power it.

Yep You are reading it right, that's why I posted it here, that would suit us perfectly with a DC-DC.

Used to use one like this with battery, but got bored of handling two batteries and chargers.

I understand completely why someone would want just the light and no battery. I'm not sure why they'd give you a charger without a battery, but whatever.

But if I read that ad quickly, I'd buy it thinking I was getting a complete kit.

Unrelated question: Has anyone tried running these off a 12v dynamo? Is it worth even trying?

i'd like to buy one as well. and they ship worldwide. though they exclude the 3 german speaking countries of europe (ch, de, at), but ship to iraq, pakistan and all other countries except the african continent. strange, very strange ... :)
there is no general way to say if those will work from 12v. i guess 90% of them WON'T. the led drivers installed are made for a single 18650 cell. some are made for dual 18650 or around 8-9v. they may survive 12v. but as this is made for usb (5v) it may have a 5v input driver only.

i still look for such a light, but as SINGLE MODE (no strobe) with 12v input and real 3a output to the led to acchieve maximum light output.

Mine didn't run on 12v, voltage cut off was around 9v from memory. Most of us with ebikes just use a dc-dc converter anyway.

yes. but those little ones that can do 60v down to 3v normally have a maximum delta of around 45v. so 12v is almost the limit. and those dc/dc converters are really small. for my 90v bike i have a regular ac/dc converter, but most of those don't work down to 40v.

Build your own:

http://www.dx.com/c/flashlights-lasers-999/flashlight-parts-and-tools-917/driver-boards-952

There are a couple there that will take up to 18V, but max out at like 15W power.

It's going to take a couple "flashlight" drivers to handle the 36W.... Maybe a Meanwell CLG-150-12 would be better suited to your needs, but it would be a HUGE unit.

I have just bought 2 of these;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Super-Bright-12W-12V-80V-Motorcycle-Electrocar-LED-Light-Headlamp-B5UT-New-/331003683468?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4d115b628c

not used them on a bike yet, they are for a new build but pretty impressive in the garden! They come with a voltage dropper and can be used on upto 20s lipo straight from the main pack!
No stupid modes and silly cheap!!

The lights I've got on now are 1200 lumen CREEs that run off 8v battery packs. I've got a variable DC-DC converter already, but I'm waiting for control panel parts before I install it.

I was just thinking that if it's not too much of a literal drag, using a dynamo could be nifty way of preserving my precious, precious electrons.

dx is the first place i look when in need of leds and drivers. unfortunately they don't have any single led buck driver with 12v+ input and 3.3v output 3a, is single mode, and has 22mm diameter (needed to fit into those small single led lamps posted above)

This is the same light, but cheaper, and Banggood do two versions, one with wide beam and the other with narrow. They''re both good. Also, their dc/dc converter is smaller and positioned inside behind the mounting bracket, leaving only two wires to connect. We waterproofed ours by sealing the mounting plate with silicon sealant because the dc/dc converter didn't look very waterproof.

I got one of these a couple of years ago but it goes to 95V. The light is ok but is just on/off- no low power mode, best is no stupid flashing mode (why do they insist on that?). It gets very hot, light colour isn't as cool as my T6 led, light distance not as far as the T6. It uses older technology, less bright, less efficient non-Cree leds, ssc maybe? If I remember what they are I'll post but that ebay supplier doesn't disclose in the ad.
It's ok if you want to use your main battery for power, you've got to add your own switch. The Cree are brighter, have a separate battery, several modes of operation, and even a switch.

Different makes will have different reflector shapes (some smooth, some stippled), different lenses, different leds, and different drivers which leads to differences in the light you see.

These use fixed focus lenses so they have to be a compromise, it's trying to find the best for you. There are posts about beam shape, distance, and brightness with pictures and videos- some on here, many others beyond these walls. So it's Google search time- and trying to interpret the findings. Try bike light reviews in google as a starting point.

An option I've never seen or tried are the focusing lights.

Best of luck.
I found the style wanted -single led, smooth lens, smooth reflector, U2 emitters (T6 would have been ok, slightly less bright and efficient, better colour light) and a twin light head.

I thought the ones I found where cheap! these are crazy prices! so I ordered a narrow and a wide angle one! :)
Let there be light!! 8)

I have not got it yet, but look at the price, could not believe it but I think
pflhobbyboy will deliver.

I Know its not the 6x cree, but these are good.

Riding off road where there are no other light than mine in mountain trails, I noticed a few facts about light brightness and vision.

It is not how many Lm that the light measures that makes better vision. This is about lenses and reflectors, those have the most influence on how wide and far you can see ahead. How neat you can see is mostly influenced by light color temp. High Lm does make a big difference on visibility though, even a very small light without reflector that gives poor vision, will draw attention from very far away if it produces high Lm.

Think your bike light as for a motorcycle: Set adequate high and low beams for good vision, and running lights that can be seen wide and far for safety.
