My day on the Salt flats - nowhere else like it on Earth.

Ran a blistering 42 mph..

52V BBSHD conversion on an HOL folder (with a gutted rear wheel) 56/13T

That's impressive for a BBSHD!
Didn't know we had another high powered builder in the SLC area, welcome!

What's the max speed without a tailwind?

Best ive seen on the DPC-18 is 38, but its squirrely above 33 - (white-knuckle riding) but the salt was beconing ..

So for people who live nearby. Can you just go there with any ol vehicle anytime there isn't official events, to have speed runs? Or are there restrictions?

It was dry and crunchy, like frozen snow. OAT was 99-103 degrees, yet i could feel and taste the salt spray - it was dry, but not. Hard as cement, yet stuck to your shoes - sticky but easy to spray off.

Yes, its open to anyone - unless there's a sanctioned event and even then there's enough desert for everybody. I imagine it's for safety as you wouldn't want to get nailed by a 32 ford at 200 plus. We had serious thunderstorms over the last few days yet the salt was perfect. Interestingly, the surrounding areas, freeway medians were mud bogged and full of water - for miles. I was concerned my trip would have been in vain. But hell yes, it was great.

To answer your question, yes you can bring any vehicle you want out there (you can't get it 'officially' timed unless it's an event) but you can go as fast and as far as you want. Suggest you get about 2 to 3 miles north of the last part paved road (to avoid the quick stop tourists - they usually don't go very far inland) and use binoculars to scope out for anybody else before you take off.

Interesting. I recently watched The World's Fastest Indian and found all the (fictionalized) rules and restrictions interesting.

To the best of my knowledge it's each man for himself. Ive been there maybe 50? times and I've never had any trouble or been accosted by a "salt ranger".
I saw 2 pick ups doing a little prep work yesterday for motorcycle trials starting tomorrow- here's a link (sounds like they may put up a blazing saddles type of barricade to let you in, there's no fencing or an actual gate there) Event Information – Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials
