Can I run a 24 volt Heinzmann hub direct with no controller?

I have a good 24 volt Heinzmann hub and wheel from a gone EV Global bike. My question to you electronic wizard people is can I just connect the hub to 2 12 volt batteries run in series, connect them to an on and off switch and start riding? I have a controller left over from an Ezip bike but really don't want the complexity of trying to figure out the wiring/throttle etc. Thanks!

It will work, but probably not for very long. The Henizman is a brushed motor so it needs no complex controller but they seem to have problems spinning the motor gears on the shafts. Additionally the freewheels give up on the older ones also. The controller apply power more smoothly than just slapping 24volts and loads of amps with a switch. I have one on my bike and it has been good, but I use a controller. Good luck.

Yeah, it would work, but likely melt down pretty quick. Greedy motor needs a controller to keep it from being a watt hog till it melts. If you do, run it in pulses of about 5 seconds on 5 seconds off, so it can cool a bit.

Best bet is get a cheap scooter controller, or maybe the ezip one. On a scooter controller the throttle wires should be pretty easy to match up, and then run the two thin wires from the motor to the on off switch. So if the sensor inside gets hot, it opens the on off circuit and shuts off the motor. Look for something in the 15-20 amp controller ballpark. I ran one on a 35 amp controller and it gets hot way fast.

As I have said numerous times before a brushed controller is basically a commodity Item (cheep) at the scooter stores. It will also limit amps and thus heat as Heinzmanns can die easily. Also as dogman and buzzfirst say the freewheels die easily from the power burst. So the short answer is NO. It is a 2 wire connection and has a heat sensor for the other wires.

Thanks guys! I'll pass on the idea of running it direct and just try to sell the Heinzmann unit in the classifieds.
