Why is my charger making a high pitch sound. It's a 48V 3A charger from china, plastic cover, and when it's plugged up (even when not charging) it has a high pitch sound. Why?
I've had this problem with a charger from ping, never found a solution.
I took one apart, put it back together and now it doesnt seem as loud.
The second one I got was a replacement because I complained, it was also broken with the same loud squeal. Squeal gets much louder when first plugged into the battery.
it may be a harmonic of the switch mode frequency. you can go to the pwm IC controller chip and change the resistor on the frequency adjusting leg to change the primary frequency and see if the noise remains.
google the chip and find the data sheet and it will tell you which leg, then go find the resistor on there now and add another in parallel or in series depending on what works. but try shifting the frequency higher.
My present charger assembly is the loudest (and also the quickest). It used to bother me but now... not so much. I know the pack is about finished when the pitch changes; there's about a 5 minute window where it wraps up the topping off and goes into safe-mode. The fans also make a lot of noise when running full-bore - but the PWM is most piercing above the din. Maybe I'll reverse out a schematic for those units as a winter project; it would be good if we could affect it so it is less conspicuous.
On the flip-side - I would be very keen on changing the frequency of my controllers if possible, but it does not appear obvious. :|
In silence, like the wind. KF
i think what creates the noise is the magnetostriction in the transformer. i cannot say i have heard it on my switchers.
i just looked on this headway charger OB2269CP is the IC pwm current controller and it looks like the frequency adjusting resistor is between pin #4 and ground surface mount 2202, 22kohm.

Well it went away, comes back only a little but if I barely tap the charger with my foot it goes away. I will keep this topic as a reference though. I just wanted to make sure danger wasn't on the way with my charger! Ha.
