I've been scratching my head (and some other parts
) trying to figure out how to make a through the gears e-drive setup for my semi-recumbent bike E out of the pile of cast off scooters and bikes I have laying around the old homestead. I was going to do a pusher trailer out of one of the scooters but now my plans have changed.
Today it came to me, I'm going to use the freewheeling rear hub and sprocket of a Chinese scooter (is that redundant?) with the wheel cut off to make a chain pulling setup that will act like a Stokemonkey from the rider's point of view in that running the motor will spin the pedals. this will be put in the chain run from the bottom of the chainring to the derailleur and will pull the chain away from the chainring, spinning the chainring in the usual direction. I did a few back of the envelope calculations and I think this rig will spin my pedals about 80 to 90 rpm which isn't far off my normal cadence.
The first thing I did was unscrew the band brake drum from the wheel hub, then I cut the spokes and turned the band brake around and screwed it back on the hub, ending up with this:
Then I needed a sprocket on the end of the hub, so I took apart a freewheel from a trashed out dept store bike I had laying around, removed the locking ring/high gear sprocket and cut the end off the freewheel with a sawzall like this..
So now I have these parts..View attachment 1
I'm going to braze the cut off threads of the freewheel onto the reversed band brake drum as you see it in the first picture and then mount the locking ring/high gear sprocket onto the threads.
I'll need to have an idler pulley to wrap the bike chain part way around the drive sprocket, I plan on using a wheel and bearing from the derailleur of the dept store bike for this..
These Chinese scooters are all over Craigslist, once the batteries die nobody wants to replace them so they get sold at very low prices, my daughter bought two of them and a nice little bicycle for $50, now the batteries are totally dead, which took my grandkids about a week of not plugging in the charger after running the batteries down, they are mine to do with as I wish..
Oh yeah, here's a pic of the kind of scooter I'm using..
