Crystalyte 400 series two speed motors

I have a couple older 400 series Crystalyte motors and despite digging around I haven't found an exact explanation of how they work exactly. Does a 408/4012 motor have windings for both and when one is in use then the other windings are not? Is there any sort of way to count the windings for an unmarked two speed motor in order to determine what each of them are? Or would I need to get something to measure the rotational speed and run the motors and figure out windings somehow from there?
 
Internet search seems to imply one connection uses every turn in the windings while the other connection returns early leaving some dead:
2 speed motor, has winding terminations at 8 and 12 turns, with hall sensor wires. No longer made, these were commin between 2000 and 2010 ...
