Dealing with cars / traffic

This is the best bicycle safety website I have ever seen, so I thought I'd share this info with people here. Check out his recommendations.

Many of the stats aggregate national numbers. With reference to sidewalks for example, the design and quality of the sidewalk systems in Toronto are COMPLETELY different than the sidewalks in...say... Victoria BC, where the sidewalks basically are LOUSY for wheeled travel. Toronto sidewalks OTOH are usually straight, often separated from the road traffic by grassy strip, long stretches with no visual obstructions or even driveways, zero drains and potholes. Oh, and almost zero pedestrians.

I find the argument about what speeds vehicles are capable of is a bit of a side-track. Like saying cars can travel much faster than legal or reasonable, so should be banned.

Most ppl I guess think of Toronto as busy downtown streets and sidewalks, but actually outside of the downtown core it's completely different. I've posted a few pics now. All taken during "busy" rush hour times. NOBODY walks because there's almost NOTHING within walking distances... unless you have a running machine <smile>
tks
Lock
...ps Of course I pick stats that support my view - doesn't everybody? <wink>

Every day, I question the reason I keep tollerating the abuse from drivers, both intentional and mistaken on their part. The bottom line is that I've always enjoyed being on the fringe of society. My choice of vehicle (i.e. a bike or scooter instead of car) has more to do with sticking it to the Man, rather than saving money on gas or being green. It gives me great pleasure to ride past a line of twenty cars waiting at a red light; I always have the pole possition in "my" lane. In doing such, I realize that I must tollerate the drawbacks (danger) of being an excentric, and that I must always keep my life insurance policy current.

What can you do with a bad car driver's license plate?

In Oregon and Washington, dial 911 and accuse the driver of road rage ... it's an easy felony arrest for a cop to get into his quota. Even if the twit wins in court, he gets to spend thousands in attorney fees.

If an adult had attempted to apply deadly force to me in such a manner, and I could not retreat from the attack, I would have shot him. If I could retreat or avoid, I would do so and use a cell phone to dial 911 instead of shooting ... and out here, they would jail the idiot immediately.

Yes, I am armed. And have a permit. And carry while bicycling. And the law in Oregon and Washington allows the use of deadly force for self defense in the face of some moron jeopardizing your life while committing a felony ( road rage ).

Only idiots act violently in the western US ... it's too damned dangerous.

I couldn't agree with you more about sticking it to the man. when someone asks about why I ride or when my girlfriend bitches about costs I cite economic reasons and saving the planet. But in reality I'm doing it to stick it to the man. The endless amounts of joy i recive while riding through a speed trap or past the DMV or gas station is worth all the danger and riding the in the pouring rain.

I've been encountering more and more Muscle Car Jerks Harrasment ....of the ...SCREAM out the window, GUN the engine and swerve the car into you variety. I'm going to start taking a notepad and pen with me when I ride and start writing down the plates

Ok, now, am I the only one who thinks this is TOTALLY INSANE???

This is exactly what's wrong with the US.

The kid whacking knoxie part or the kbarret shooting them part?

If I was in his hypothetical situation, I'd have shot him, too. Not fatally, of course, but I would have shot him. Since the law probably wouldn't allow me ripping him out of the car and beating his ass. People like that don't need to be driving. :?

"Not fatally, of course, but I would have shot him"

Not fatally?

How can you attempt to "not fatally" shoot someone? Left lung maybe? Maybe a kneecap?

This is totally insane. You would be charged with attempted murder here if you did that - you might get of on self defence, but the level of defence has to be no higher than the level of aggression.

A violent gun culture leads to a violent gun culture...it's self reinforcing. Someone (incompetent) was after Obama with a SNIPER RIFLE the other day (or that's how it was reported here). How on earth can you lot justify weapons like that being legal??

ALL guns should be illegal/highly controlled. If there are no guns, there is no gun crime.

Riding on the sidewalk is decision you make on a case by case basis. There is a city south of Seattle (Kent) where the bike path is the sidewalk with wide ramps at intersections.

I have a supervisor at work that is being inundated with phone calls from the police. It seems he is riding in the carpool lane all by himself, or he is a litterbug and even has displayed road rage.

There are all these signs along the roads that ask as to call a phone number if we see something so my co workers are calling these numbers to report the supervisor. He does not get a ticket but just getting the phone call is a hassle.

The bigger you look the better. I don't have the link but one guy was making a flag on a plastic pole about 14 inches long that you would hang horizontal off the back. It would stick out and cars would swing wider around you. Maybe you would get the same effect if you strapped a cardboard tube across the back.

Arm. Leg. Tire.

Guess that last one's not necessarily non-fatal, though. :?

Does it help that I know how to make a gun out of scrap metal and plumbing parts and a bullet from fireworks and the same?

Which I guess brings up an interesting thought: I kinda wonder what would happen if they really did ban guns or something. It seems that there'd still be those who know how to make them, and there'd still be those who want them. I'm guessing gun-making would become an illegal (obviously) and highly profitable business...

Bah. Ignore me. Off-topic rambling.

The Devil's Right Hand
(Steve Earle)

About the time that Daddy left to fight the big war
I saw my first pistol in the general store
In the general store, when I was thirteen
Thought it was the finest thing I ever had seen
So l asked if I could have one someday when I grew up
Mama dropped a dozen eggs, she really blew up
She really blew up and I didn't understand
Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand

The devil's right hand, the devil's right hand
Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand

My very first pistol was a cap and ball Colt
Shoot as fast as lightnin' but it loads a mite slow
Loads a mite slow and soon I found out
It can get you into trouble but it can't get you out
So then I went and bought myself a Colt 45
Called a peacemaker but I never knew why
Never knew why, I didn't understand
Cause Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand

Well I get into a card game in a company town
Caught a miner cheating I shot the dog down
Shot the dog down, watched the man fall
Never touched his holster, never had a chance to draw
The trial was in the morning and they drug me out of bed
Asked me how I pleaded, not guilty I said
Not guilty I said, you've got the wrong man
Nothing touched the trigger but the devil's right hand

The devil's right hand, the devil's right hand
Mama said the pistol is the devil's right hand

To see what would happen if they really did ban guns, see the movie Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Some good life lessons in that one. Like choose your freinds carefully. I'm allways a bit amused by the gun argument. My state, lived here all my life, bans guns only from bars and polling places. You can stroll right into the bank with a shotgun and there is no law against it if you don't conceal it. Gotta unload it to drive though. Funny how 1880 laws can still be on the books.

Aren't there more guns per capita in Canada, but far less shootings? It's not the guns. What about cars, alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, being fat, and just plain stupidity? Each kill far more people every year than guns. I'd bet that even people talking on cell phones at inopportune times gets more people killed than guns (not even considering that they mostly likely cause brain tumors). If you really want to do some good, let's ban the whole lot. What about computers and video games that are causing people to get fatter? Where does legislating private lives stop? Most gun deaths are suicides anyway, so I say let'em have at it, there's already too many people on this planet. If you don't like the violence, just move some place safer.

That's my 2 colonies worth (local current worth about $.000036)

Where?

I've never seen one, other than holstered on a Policemen's belt.

Yes, that's EXACTLY how it is around here.

I wonder how I missed all that gun action going on right in front of my eyes?...

Ask one of those policemen if they are the only guys who have guns.. just because YOU don't see them, they don't exist?

We could go a week, maybe two without a report of an armed robbery, etc, in the paper nationally.

Gun crime is pretty uncommon here.

Another good example of guns are banned. Mexico. The murder rate there is unbeliveable the last two years. When they get shot up, people run bleeding across the bridge on the border so they don't get shot some more in the hospital. Most of the victims are people standing next to a cop the hitmen were sort of aiming for. Funny, lotsa people hiding on this side, but so far, no hitmen are coming on this side to shoot up the place. I wonder why? Chick chick! Couldn't be that everybody in the state has a rifle on the rack in the truck?

Watch and listen to Steve Earle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgiTn0pQprU good but not Copperhead Road

Lolz TD.

Fair enough Mark, what works in one country might not in another. We could go a week or 2 arguing about this without swaying anybody's stance. Better we got back on topic.. cars and traffic! :)
