Present practicality aside, it seems an important, new?, fundamental building block component.
just as a PV cell transduces light energy directly to electricity, this does from radiation.
I guess its not new, whats new is a safe package for it.
Just saying, but if Oz were to become a nuke waste repository, as many advocate, we could end up sitting on a valuable asset.
IMHO, if the diamond is artificially grown, then perhaps it can be finely engineered with capillaries etc. to maximise "contact" surface area with the radioactivity. i.e. - huge scope for improved performance numbers.
