sorry to hear about your damage and injury. my understanding - pedestrians always have right-of-way on sidewalks. If you go there, 'gotta adapt to them not the other way around.

Yeah and remember that these young people with their phones are oblivious to the world around them. Seems that texting is more important than the well-being of others...

Sorry to hear that. Praying for you to have a safe and sane ride. Be careful if you put ice on your shoulder, sometimes the extreme cold temperature makes a shoulder worse. Moist heat works better, IMHO.

Good point. I have been reading up on ice and apparently apart from numbing the pain it does more harm than good to injuries.

“When ice is applied to a body part for a prolonged period, nearby lymphatic vessels begin to dramatically increase their permeability (lymphatic vessels are ‘dead-end’ tubes which ordinarily help carry excess tissue fluids back into the cardiovascular system). As lymphatic permeability is enhanced, large amounts of fluid begin to pour from the lymphatics ‘in the wrong direction’ (into the injured area), increasing the amount of local swelling and pressure and potentially contributing to greater pain.” The use of Cryotherapy in Sports Injuries,’ Sports Medicine, Vol. 3. pp. 398-414, 1986

Bummer to hear, kids just get way too involved with that cyber chatting that the real world doesn't exist, hope you can mend well

I see lots of adults walking just as oblivious to everything. Not just near the colledge either. You did the right thing to not hit him, but I bet you kinda almost wish you had now eh? Sucks there just happened to be a pole in just that spot. Arggh!

2 days ago I had a accident and after that experience, you and me are lucky we didn't brake something like a collarbone or arm!! I was holding a small dog in my arms(crossing a street) at the time and thought I wasn't going as fast as I apparently was and hit a iron fence more or less 20 or so degrees of head on. Bent my fork a bit, but you totally bending the fork in,you sure you were only going 10kph? Also fell on my cross bar between my legs, my balls killed. Probably can't have no kids anymore!!!

That's why I don't trust a dinky bells, pedestrians, dogs, and riding on the sidewalk.

If I'm in an area with pedestrians, I either slow down OR yell at them something like: Passing!, On your right!, Bike Lane! (depending on the situation and who has precedence on that path)

If the pedestrian is walking a little dog and not paying attention to it's whereabouts I will yell and swerve *like* I'm going to hit the dog. Owners start to pay more attention when they suddenly realize that being aloof on a bike path can be dangerous, especially for their precious little yippers. Of course, I don't plan on hitting them, just scaring them enough so they think about it in the future.

It's usually people not paying attention to their surroundings that cause dangerous situations, like in the OP's example. Scaring them a bit increases their awareness, however mean it may be.

obviously you werent looking where you were going. always have an alternate route planned in case of non-compliance of objects or new data about new objects in your intended path. I know how fast I can stop and on the sidewalk i always expect someone to walk out of a store doorway or around a corner. always expect it, and it wont be a surprise. So i leave that distance between the door and me always, and i just look at that door , expecting the walker, here it comes, and often times they do come strolling around the corner, and i pass slow and low instead of hitting them at 50kmh, i even get to mumble hi to some of these "lucky" folks.

If i hit a pole, and dint break anything other than a fork i would be counting my blessings. a hydro pole and a midnight ride ended my cousins life, ive been lucky enough to avoid them.

Buck up!!

edit lucky you dint actually break the fork, my friend broke a fork during a trials stunt which shoved the broken part into his mouth, shattering his upper jaw, causing him immense suffering

I'm confused. You're riding on the most dangerous place there is for a bicycle and you ran into a stationary object, but somehow someone else is to blame. If you have to blame someone, don't blame the kid who had the right of way, blame Bush.

Oh OK, I'm the one who needs to think. Who hit a stationary object on his bike because a kid was walking on the sidewalk oblivious to the rest of the world while he was messing with his phone or whatever? You're a grown up, so set a good example and take responsibility for your own actions.

Riding on the sidewalk is usually a bad idea. And you're doing it on an e-bike? At a speed too high for you to react properly to a situation you were aware of?! Then you try to make it the fault of the sidewalk user who was supposed to be there.

I don't know what to say except you're lucky you got off so easy, and you didn't hurt someone else. Next time don't be stupid.

Teens are an interesting animal. They need far more supervision than pre-adolescents, and yet they get less.

If a teen is left unsupervised, then they are doing one of the two following:

1. Getting in trouble.

2. Planning trouble.

It's not their fault. Just crazy chemistry. Too much of one hormone, dropped levels of another; bad mixes. You name it. Science shows that their brains are confused at that age and unpredictable.

They'r no different, however, than any other teens (gadgets make no difference). The Salem Witch trials started with teens.

Here in OC Cali, most cyclists use the sidewalk because the street is too dangerous for casual riding. Teens and skateboards like to use all the wheelchair driveways and business walkways as stunt ramps. 8) Faster riders do tend to use the street and have to take their chances with all the distracted drivers. Lycra packs tend to stick to PCH, where solo riders are fair game for the cagers.

FYI.. i only ride the sidewalk in rush hour traffic...at 86 i am well aware that i do not have the responses that i had at 46...for that same reason i do not ride a high speed ebike...50kph maz...usualy about 40kph... though i pedal almost as much as i power.... I NEVER USE POWER ON A SIDEWALK...that i had control, and was well aware of the situation should be quite obvious... i rang my bell,,he lookedup but did not stop ....or move a lttle to the side..which he c ould easilt have done ...he was NOT staiunary, but I STILL HAD TIME TO TURN OUT OF HIS PATH ....unfortunayely forr me the lampost was not able to move... what really annoyed me most was his complete indifference to my situation...i was pinned under the bike, obviously in pain [i stil dont have full use of my left arm] anbd he just kept going without even asking if iwas ok,or trying to help me up.l... I RAISED MY CHILDREN TO SHOW TRUE RESPECT AND CONSIDERATION TO OTHERS ... i still say THINK. then respond.... PS..i DO take full responsibility for running into the lampost  apologies will be gracefully accepted

Your cousin and friend was riding a ebike? Sounds more like a motorcyle accident...
