Discharging lipo to zero volts

I decided to get rid of a couple of old lipo packs I have sitting around so I discharged them to zero volts. One of them (a 6s pack) puffed like crazy. Should I try to get the gas out of them before taking them in to my local recycling center?

they are fine as they are. Safe now, you can just recycle them, or chuck them if your landfill is lined.

You can also, next time, put them in the recycle discharged to 2.5v, where they will have very little energy left in them, with the terminals taped. They may puff some then, but not as much.

Now I'm curious, what is the gas that is generated when a LiPo puffs? I've been told it has a slightly sweet fragrance...

I believe it's Hydrogen gas when puffed and that sickly sweet Cherry smell is like a solvent. Ugh!

I usually drain with an old incandescent bulb until it's pretty close to zero volt. I then solder any remaining leads as a dead short, let 'em sit a day or two to be sure nothing spews and then chuck 'em in garbage.

Throw them in a bucket with salt water and then recycle.

Will saltwater get rid of the puffing? I've already discharged them down to zero volts.

No.
It will completely destroy any power in them.

In theory. I'm pretty sure discharging to zero volts is more reliable. Like I said though, I already discharged it to zero volts. I was just concerned about the puffing.
