This is the result of a change i wanted to try from few month and i was not aware of motocross 16" tires could fit PERFECTLY on 20" wheel bicycle rim!!

Like ZaPpat said.. these things make your ebike look like a Tractor !!

Strill not tried on the road... some wiring and new update to terminate before!

That will be perfect for the outdoor snow!!!

I must specify that these tires are not exactly 20 inches .. but are 22.5 duiameters wich is just EXACTLY what i searched for month!!! the perfect trade off between 20" and 24" !!!

Plus.. these tires are so wide and soft than the putholes will become less frustrating!!

I dont bother with the Wh per km... This ebike is a beast.. not a super efficient green thing!!!.. it is built FOR FUN !!! but still green !!

NOW i can say that i'll be able to bring an ebike to a friend that would like to go for an offroad ride with me!!

Ebiking with a friend is priceless!!.. for everything else.. there is PAYPAL !...

Was thinking the same, but hey.. if the cops in his area aren't ticcy-tacky about enforcement, why not? I'd want to do it if I could get away with it here.

I bet even limited at 750W/20mph it'd still be a hoot in the snow.

Wow.. that thing is butch !!...

how did the wheel lacing go ?

Lacing the front wheel with 14 gauge DT Champion on tripple cross mode was EASY

Lacing the rear wheel with 2mm too long 12g spokes and eyeslet made to take max 13 gauge WAS... REALLLLLY DIFFFICCCULLLTTT !!!! .. more than i expected!!!!

First the spokes are 2mm too long for these rims. These Zero Motorcycle rim are probably 3-4mm smaller inner diameter than the crystalyte 20" rims.

THE SOLUTION: ADDING A 10-32 nut to the nipple as a spacer. I did not found any washers that fit correctly but the 10-32 small nut with small outher diameter was perfect to add the 2mm per spokes and let the nipple to not reach the end of the thread. I also had to offset a bit the rim from the motor axis like all old X5 gen need and the spokes did not got out of the nipple head :)
JUST PERFECT !!!

Now.. about the nipples, the nipples for the 12 gauge are too large to fit in the oem eyeslet of these rims.

1st solution tried: drilling the eyeslet with progressive drill bit size to not let the eyeslet spin on the rim = UNSUCCESFULL :?

2nd solution tried: using glue to fix the eyeslet to the rim: Epoxy = UNSUCESSESFULL !! LOCTITE 401 = BETTER BUT STILL UNABLE TO MAKE ALL EYESLETS

3rd solution tried: USING round file ( like Ypedal suggested ... and that i kept in mind but was too lazy to try... )... SUCCESFULL !!!!

Now all spokes are perfectly thightened and the wheels are straight.

The difference is simple Bicycle frame HAVE PEDALS !!!!.. MOTOCROSS.. DONT!

Here, As soon as a cops see that you have pedals, they stop bugging you !.. It is still important to pedal to not catch their attention too when riding at resonable speed!!

On my side, i thing that often during some night ride on the paved road, I have so many LUMENS ( L E D S ) on the ebike than they think it's a normal motorcycle and dont see the pedal

I have 11000 lux at 1 meter on front and 3600 lumens.. brighter thna many HID cars light!

I MUST SAY:

THANKS YPEDAL     :D

FOR THESE WONDERFULL STRONG RIMS!!!! I KNOW YOU STILL HAVE 30-40 of them

HIGHLY RECOMMAND !!!

44mm width.. super strong!! probably fit ant 16" motocross or motorcycle tire

Super nice. I may not have snow but I sure have sand. I just finished my mongoose blackcomb build today and now I see I'm not finished yet!
I may have to get ahold of one of those rims, and try it on my ol 5304. And I do have two of them blackcombs.

You will appreciate these Blackcomb! Just dont forget to grease all pivot bushing every season!! For th rest.. it's pretty tough bike !.. Mine support 130 pounds ( without me) from 3 years now and traveled near 6-7000km!

Teh rear steel swing arm is nice and strong and easy to mod for torque arm!!

BTW.. I have two Strong alominum 8mm torque arm from the first gen i made with CNC is you are interested in let me know.

1:02 am

I just come from a FANTASTIC RIDE !!!

That new setup..is really Impressive and give a good feeling!

I goes in the forest around 3km deep and on the skidoo path with moderate snow ( medium to soft), I toke some ski path too and i have to say these tires are awsome! The 60W of LEDs on the snow in the forest was beautifull !

On the cold pavement there is some vibrations.. just like on motocross but the handling is very well !

Average speed was 40km and the Wh per km was 60.

I left the tires with only 20 PSI to get better traction on snow... Tomorrow i'll try different pressure on the same path to just see it that change something...

I also limited the power to "just" 8) 5000W because of that is first ride and the controller is freshly repaired and the battery was in standby mode for month.

This is some pictures for you.. more details and angles..

Is the Walmart Blackcomb the same bike as yours, and you just/only upgraded the wheels/tires or more on the bike :?:

Did you upgrade the fork or brakes?

Can you shoot some night video in the woods & snow? It would be beautiful to share here...

Yes, It is the same Wallmart ebike at 350$ .. as well as Sears 500$

I upgraded everything... front Fork, torque arm on the swing arm, grips, pesal, tires, rim, disk brake from 6 cable to 8 inch hydraulic.

I bought this model due to the large room to place battery! and the fact that this placement for the battery also balance the bike when you put a rear motor!

Doc

Pedal?   More like the inside foot skiing all the time for snow riding.

I'm seriously impressed, but I do have a suggestion. Snow bike = at some point riding in slush, so you need a rear fender for sure. So add a seatpost rack, put the controller on top of it, and then put something on the bottom of the rack, and the downtube to keep all that water and slush off your back, and off your controller. I like to use scraps of foam fatigue mat, but a real fender, or a piece of coroplast would work fine. In front, your battery box is a fender.

thanks for the offer of torque arm. I just did this instead, and a regular nut on the other side.CIMG0181.JPG

I'm with deVries, it can be cool to see a nice video's at night in action, the trail we have took last summer is a ski trail in winter it can be fun to have a set up like you next year.

Great job my friend, cool to see that it work great in snow path, take care!

I see "Dual" in the topic name, so where's the other motor? It looks great as 1wd, but I'm sure you have a smaller hubbie laying around that would be a perfect addition to your snow tractor bike.

yeah... Dual.. WHEEL.. not motor

I did not found any strong enough fork to hold the power of an X5 without breaking...

But.. that would be awsome!.. on snow... not ice.

Doc

With a disc brake don't you think you can create faster deceleration than the motor can create acceleration? Assuming that true, then of course the fork is strong enough. The only issue is handling the axle twisting torque, which is easy with mods.

I wasn't thinking of an X5 up front anyway. I'd go with a lighter motor and run less current to it. 2/3kw up front with 5kw at the rear sounds about right to me. You can play around with different torque combinations front/rear using the controllers' programmable current limits, and as long as the motors aren't overly mismatched you can make the rpms equal for a given throttle setting by using the programmable speed limits.
