So I was thinking about possibilities for carrying passengers on an ebike when a sidecar came to mind. Then, with the dual motor thread still fresh in my mind, I thought about an e-powered sidecar with a hub motor. A sidecar also seems like it might be a good place to mount/store/hide some batteries! What do you guys think? Has this been mentioned before? Is it a realistic idea?

Here are some pics from some image searches to get ya'lls' mental gears a-turnin'...

Is that a hub motor in the wheel under that cow?!

Hoe-kay, it's caption the photo time.
'Going to the chapel & we're gonna get married.'
It would be great if you could train a cow to lean out like the guy in the previous pic.

Check out the fifth pic in this thread.

If the cow can be trained to get-and-sit in the sidecar, probably it can be trained to lean too. During my early teens, I lived with a few dozen sheep and cattle on a small ranch. If I wasn't careful, I'd find myself surrounded by cattle seeking a meal -- rather intimidating since I didn't usually carry anything to feed them. :D

Awesome thread! It'd be even cooler if this guy mounted a solar panel there in place of the glass to give those batts some free juice and keep them shaded.

I really like the sport bikes in there too! Golden; you guys should really make a "best of" section on this site with threads like these stickied.

I was thinking of the possibility of someday making a two-person ebike. The configuration would either have to be a side-car or tandem. When gas gets really expensive, the wife and I will both have to ride places together....

I was going to buy one of these for my boy. But then I figured his pedaling wouldn't help much, so why not just make a motorized trailer with pegs instead of pedals? I think I will. It could be used on any bike, with or without a passenger...

A sidecar rig would be great for space and concealment, but the width really puts me off.

Theres a guy who rides around my area with a sidecar motorcycle rig, he rides alone in the sidecar portion! He must have fed in the steering, brakes and throttle. It looks strange seeing it going down the road with no rider on the motorcycle seat. I guess its legal. You could arrange something like this for a electric motorcycle used in inclement weather.

A sidecar for an ebike is not going to be so difficult - the difficult part, as with any sidecar is getting it to lean. What you may run into very quickly, however, is problems with the law. With the added weight of the side card you may very quickly need to exceed the maximum size motor for your project and end up with an electric motorcycle rather than an ebike.
