EcoReco M5 Motor Upgrade

Hi there,
I just got a Ecoreco M5. Charged the battery up and took it for a test ride, was so disappointed in the lack of power. I'm 170lbs and on the flat the scooter only got up to 14.2 mph.
It's a 36v 250w 6 inch hub motor with drum brake. I was wondering if anyone has upgraded the motor? I'm thinking something around 350w - 450w motor. I want to get 18-20mph.
If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great!!

Yeah, did a search on here and spent hours looking on the Internet, but couldn't find any info on a stronger motor for the Ecoreco M5. I saw some 6 inch hub motors but they are 250w. I don't want to buy one and it's the same power as the one that it came with. And also a lot of the Chinese motor online over state the power/ rpm.

I was unhappy with my scooter out of the box so I changed the controller and batteries. I used a Lyen controller which gave me more torque, and added 12s lipos which gave me about a 4mph increase in speed. I see a lot of ecorecos around and it seems like the guys on them are having a tough time getting up to speed. You can see what I did to my scooter below, hope this helps.

So when can I bring my EcoReco to your garage for a upgrades? Lol. I been following your build, your skills level is way over my head. I'm more of a plug and play. I was bummed when I read that you burned the throttle and maybe the controller.
But I have good news!! After reading on the EcoReco site about the "Configure top speed". I opened the scooter up and for some reason my scooter came with the speed limited set at 12.5mph. I reconfigure the wires and now the noload test on the speedometer shows 24mph. I also disable the safety push-off.
I also managed to put a 8 inch air tire in the front. Rim and tire came from a Razo E200. Had to lose the mud guard and put in rubber bushing on the shock shalf to stop it from compressing all the way.

I was going to go for a test ride. I know it's 3am, but for some odd reason it's raining in California....WTF

Thanks for the kind words man. I got too excited/careless when I was bench testing and crossed wires, oh well it happens.
Glad you disabled the governor let us know how it goes.

Most brushless motors can handle lots more voltage and current than they are getting out of the box. Feel free to upgrade your battery and speed controller by 30%. That should get you closer to what you want.

Finally got to go for a test ride, 19.6mph on the flats.
Do you guys think I can just change out the motor to a 350w motor and get better performance?
I stock controller is a 36v 17A. The space under the deck is already really tight, the stock controller is about 4x2.5x2 inches.

What about getting a 24v 250w motor and running it at 36v?. I have a 36v 250w motor now.

I realize this is an older thread and the original poster probably has moved on. However, for those with the same concern, it should be noted that some Eco Reco scooters have been reported to have the speed controller engaged out of the box. If you open up the deck, there should be 3 wires. According to Eco Reco's Youtube video, they're clearly labeled. I suspect the wires capping you off at 12.5mph may have been connected. If you unplug this, you should be able to release the power and achieve closer to the advertised 20mph speed.

I recently bought the newer S3 model and the speed controller was NOT engaged. It topped 20mph out of the box on a flat road. I'm 5'-7", don't exercise and weight approximately 155lbs. Eco Reco claims that tests were done at consistent speed on flat roads for a rider that's 170lbs, so I'd think something was seriously wrong if you're not getting past 14mph top speed in similar conditions.
