EDIT........ My friends bike is actually 135mm between the drop outs. We are thinking of installing a mac 10t rear hub on this bike. His bike has a nine speed on it and he would like to keep his shifter and chain so it would be nice to order the 9 speed free wheel at the time of purchase. What I am not sure about is I understand the 9 speed free wheel is 4mm wider than the 8 speed and cellman says you need a spacer.A couple of questions I am unclear on.....
1. Does this mean you have to flex the chain stays wider than the 135 stock spacing to fit the axle, free wheel and the spacer?
2.I am assuming the spacer is so the smallest of the cog set does not rub on the chain stay, is this correct?
2. My friends bike has a very sturdy chain stay assembly and it will not flex at all to open up wider than the 135mm so we may need to go with a stock 8 speed or seven but then this means a new trigger shifter if he goes the 8 speed route.
3.Has anyone used a nine speed with a 135mm spacing and how did it go?
