i almost bought a P-51 in 1976 for 10k 8)
that was all the $ i had, so i got a Corvette instead  8)
You would not have been able to fly it if you bought that P51 in 1976, back then it probably cost $80/hr to fly, you'd be lucky to fly at $400/hr these days.

If you got that for $10k in the 70's you could have turned it over at a profit damn quick. At that time the Air Force was even considering a new version of the Mustang as ground support/attack, though they didn't have the foresight to order any. It would have topped the A-29 Tucano they took up in recent years.

The fuel cost is what killed the deal. I could afford to take off, and land within 5 minutes  But now i realize that would of been plenty of fun for an amateur.
But D is right, as soon as i could of got 20k, i'd sell as doubling my money would be hard to pass up. Unless i loved those 5 minute in the air too much to sell- this i will never know
