When I torque down the retaining ring on the axle of the bottom bracket, I notice that it doesn't spin as freely as before tightening it. I'm worried that maybe my bike is slightly larger than the 68mm. Although if it is, it is pretty darn close to 68mm. Is this situation bad? If so, any thoughts on how to fix it?

Thanks,
Bob

Hi,

How tight are you tightening the retaining ring?

You torque the two bearing cups that screw into the BB shell to 35Nm. Then you insert the axle and tighten the retaining ring. The specified torque setting for the retaining ring is only 3Nm which is only slightly more than hand tight. A drop of blue thread-lock is also optional here.

The retaining ring pre-loads the bearings so it is expected that the axle will be a little bit more difficult to turn after tightening, but it shouldn’t be much more difficult and should still turn smoothly. Be careful not to over-tighten it because this can damage the bearings.

Thanks,
Oli.
