Firefighter shoots bicyclist - Asheville, NC

That is insane. He may not have been on drugs but there is some chemicals out of wack somewhere.

i bet they drop the charges yet. he shot a bicyclist, in the south no less, just like shooting dogs, nobody cares.

by the end of this i bet the guy ends up getting off and gets retired on a disability pension of $100k/year. his mental problems will be proven to part of his workplace injury by his union.

that's what they do with the cops since they never go to jail for shooting people for free and this guy is a wanna be cop it seems.

The government protects it's own. They are real good at that when it comes to cops shooting people, very easy to justify no matter what the circumstances. It is going to be a stretch for a firefighter. But then again all the firefighter has to do is claim he saw the guy make a move. "I swear, I truly believe that he might of had a gun".

Deron.

Boder Patrol can even shoot unarmed mexicans in the back as they run back across the river. Bush let two of em off of their 20 year murder sentences as he left, but they were pissed they didn't get the full blown pardon. The pardon would have let em have thier jobs back, and pack guns again. At least now all they can do is be security guards with mace.

It's true though, that a lot a bullets fly north across the border these days. La Migra is downright jumpy now.

I dont see how the city's insurance policy is going to cover this situation. No justification of being on call, at work, performing his fire-fighting duties. 50-50% this guy is going to be on his own. (But maybe it is the ciy's fault for not knowing his wife had indigestion and argued with him two days ago)

Its just a part of the Law enforcement/government mentality of "do as I say or else". Please Please, lets hope this time all of those involved are white guys. I want it to stay on the topic of "government entitlement".
(the fire department behaved stupidly)

My two watts worth

"Osvaldo Davila a Mexican with a record of drug smuggling was armed as he crossed the Mexican U.S. border one night bringing drugs (750 pound of marijuana) into the United States. Ramos and Compean got into a gun battle with Davila. After being shot in his buttocks Davila ran back to Mexico. The officers had a bunch of marijuana and no bad guy to arrest so they cut the paperwork by not telling the whole story, including shooting at Davila".

"After receiving immunity to testify in the case against the two agents, Aldrete-Davila was arrested in 2007 on charges of bringing more than 750 pounds of marijuana into the United States."

"Evidence from the second and third drug smuggling run was sealed by trial judge Kathleen Cardone during the original trial which convicted border agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean".

From what I understand Davila was running drugs (was even given a border crossing card) while under immunity to testify against the officers. In court the jury did not get to hear that Davila was a drug runner. I believe this would have made the testimony of Davila not very credible, the word of a drug runner against the words of two officers.

Bush as everyone knows was sucking up to the Mexican Government demand that these officers put in jail.

Hmm, maybe my notroriously faulty memory, but in the local El Paso news I don't recall the mexicans shooting at the BP agents. Allways wondered if it was just a delivery gone bad in the first place. You can be sure that lots of dope crosses with help from cops, that's why the guys on the bridge never know which lane they will be checking, and get moved around from booth to booth a lot during the day.

In another local example that took place a block from my house, a Las Cruces police officer shot dead a guy with a knife. The officer was in immediate danger since the dude was 40 feet away and wasn't charging the cop. No point in talking to the guy some more, he could have thrown the knife 40 feet. That one was ruled a justified shoot. I'm sure every town has it's example.

Not entirely the cops fault, as I was meaning about all the bullets that fly across the border. Nowdays a lot of perps have a shitload of guns and ammo, where back in the 60's they might have a 25 caliber pop gun. The LA bank robber shootout is a good example of why the cops are so jumpy.

If the shooter had been a plumber, would the headline have read Asheville plumber charged in roadside shooting?

If it bleeds, it leads. It's all about selling news, they figured they would sell more news if they made it more controversial. Who cares if a plumber shot someone, but a firefighter. Cross dressing firefighter would sell even more news.

My state is pretty f'ed up when it comes to bicycle perceptions. Two weeks ago, an area bicycle safety advocate was killed in a traffic accident.

You'd think folks would have more common sense than to write a letter to the editor of the local paper, using this poor souls corpse to grandstand against the use of bicycles.

You would be wrong.
