Hey there!

So excighted to get going on this project. I have done a fair amount of research and looked over the wiki some and I still have some pretty newb questions for ya'll.

*As suggested by wesnewell here are the simple facts of what I am looking for. Going to look at Kona Stinky to build it on later today. Long range is a preference.*

*Desired max speed on level ground: 30-35
*Desired max range at what cruising speed: 100 miles @20+mph
*Preferred bike size, or size of bike you want to convert: Kona Stinky 19" Frame
*Rider weight: 150lbs+ ocasional trailer not to exceed 100lbs
*Terrain. Exp: Some hills under 20% and occasional mountains

My goal for this build will be a reliable, efficient, comfortable and capable bike to use to haul some things for work by trailer as well as take long trips with (100+ miles would be nice). I live in Burlington VT where there is no known E-bike scene, so would also like to represent as well as I could!

Today I will be going to look at an older vintage (early 2000's) Kona Stinky. Its a large frame which is a concern (19" frame and Im 5'11"), but its the right price ($450). I read that slightly larger bikes then usual are good for E-bike builds which is the only reason Im considering it. The bike Im hoping can be an all arounder able to handle some light trails on the weekends, and som grar potholes on the workdays. When I tow on workdays it would not be anything tremendously huge, a max of 100lbs tow and I am 150lb rider.

THOUGHTS ON BUILD-

BIKE: To make it more road efficient I was thinking of putting some appropriatly sized road tires on it for starts. Also was fantasizing about a windscreen like one of these to help with road efficiency as well http://www.zzipper.com/Products/prod_upright.php

MOTOR: I've been leaning heavily toward the BBS02. Burlington where I live is built on a big Vermont hill, so I think that the gear option would be nice especially if towing some weight. Also, I am very keen on em3ev for purchases until I found this "updated" BBS02 on amazon which comes with an "updated controller" thats 16 mosfet as opposed to the kit on em3ev that is 9 mosfet (I believe)... I have no idea what this means, tried to find out what mosfet is, all that I can manage is that its a very elusive word. Any help with clarification on this word would be super appreciated as I think a small boost of power from the 8FUN would be good for me. Here is the amazon link- http://www.amazon.com/Electric-Bafang-8fun-Version-Controller/dp/B00LGC3QIY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1421853602&sr=8-1&keywords=bbs02&pebp=1421853608792&peasin=B00LGC3QIY

BATTERIES: I want to be a range king for lightwieght bluemoon trips to my folks place 100+ miles away. I was thinking of starting with a 22ah batt from em3ev (this one specifically- http://em3ev.com/store/index.php?route=product/product&path=35&product_id=134 ) and then get another identical one down the road and have one on each side of the rear rack. Also, does anyone know why on that battery page the 19.6ah is more expensive than the 22ah?

Thanks guys! I think that I uploaded a pic of the exact bike Im going to take a look at in a bit (kinda big eh?)..

Any help would be great, Ill check back in in a bit :D

I love stinkys. Probably because I have one. The older versions, like the one in the picture have a big triangle for batteries. Not sure if you would be able to put that battery in the triangle though since I haven't done it.

I am still a relative noob so I will let the more knowledgeable members help with technical stuff but 100 miles is not gonna happen with what you have selected.

I would encourage you to shop around though. For instance, the motor kit that you linked to on amazon for $850.00 can be bought on AliExpress for less than $500.00 here is the link:

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/48v-...or-the-controller-crank-Motor/1982672009.html

$481.81 to be exact and $368 buys a lot of bananas, or batteries, or tires; if you get my drift.

Good luck with the build.

If you buy from em3ev you get a well made battery that should last with real support. The battery is the heart of an ebike. Just don't go over its rated use. Vendor support is important.

Thanks guys

At the very least I plan on going with em3ev for the battery. Once I get the bike I will take measurments to see if the larger (24.8ah) triangle pack will fit. Also just called the local Kona place and they said that the 19" frame should fit me perfectly so I am less worried about that one now.

Meeting the dude at 5:30 tonight and keeping my fingers crossed!!

Before buying a motor kit from that Amazon vendor named Busettii, please search for "Busettii" on this forum and read about them. Here's a search link:

This comes up for instance:

Thanks, I see I needed to clarify my post a little. By bike size, I meant wheel size. And a few other clarifications. Assuming no disc brakes, Any of the 48V 1000W kits will do what you want as far as speed. However 100 miles @ 20mph would require a huge battery pack of ~2kw. At present time, this is the best deal going on motor kits. If you have disc brakes select the one that comes with it.

I've got almost 4 years and 15K miles on mine without problems.
