Freewheel removal

With a freewheel removal socket. For hub motors you need one with a 14mm hole in it. You can buy them, or just drill out a standard one.

And special one.

you will need a long spline freewheel remover/park tool, the normal size is not long enough to reach. i know from experience.

Once you have the freewheel remover, put a bike chain on your freewheel and step on the chain to stop the freewheel from turning as you loosen it.

No, no teeth inside. Thanks guys.

The teeth should be deep inside there, look closely. if not then i don't know what to tell you

Possible to use a regular freewheel removal tool once you pull the cover off the motor. with the axle out of the way, you don't need the tool with a big hole for the fat axle.

That looks like a cassette to my old eyes. Try gently tapping what looks like a lock-ring counterclockwise.

thanks Ykick - yes, there is a lock-ring. Counterclockwise will be the answer - I will do that when I get home!

Not so quick, I hadn't seen that picture and I can see splines deep inside. The lockring may be to disassemble the freewheel?

No problem - I will try with with a freewheel tool first - one is on order.

the reason for removal - the axle is very loose, suspected failed side cover bearing (as per Hyena's advice).

What motor is this? Looks kinda small for DD. Geared hub motors I've had apart use 2 piece axles.

As mentioned, you may be able to remove the cover with the freewheel?

it's a geared hub - sorry, didn't know that info was relevant! An upgraded Hyena motor.

Heya Peter, I've been on a ES hiatus - glad to see you got it off. Got backfrom camping and got your email too.

Motor is a Mac, gotta be simple to press a new bearing in that cover and see what comes of it.

Hi Sam,

Good to hear from you - hope you had a good time camping!

Took some more photos - when the side cover came off, there were a couple of loose metal rings that appear to have sheared off. The ring on the axle is loose as well (where I put the chisel to pop it up).

bought a new side cover from EM3EV, rather than trying to sort out a new bearing. Such quick service.

Photos show the original bearing just disappeared - no sign on it, other then some shards of metal

I took a classic freewheel remover tool and drilled out the inner hole where the axle would go. It took a very long time. EM3EV sells a proper freewheel remover tool. I DONT have the same problem as you, my freewheel doesnt come off due to the friction fit is no longer working.

Looks like my old one, and the new one I need. I measure 148.75mm from outter ridge to outter ridge on my old one. BMC motor.
The ridge width is 4.4mm. Hole diameter is 16.92mm. Wondering if you can confirm the new EM3EV MAC motor cover plate dimensions. The ridge I talk about is just below the bolt holes.

Thanks

The tool is hardened steel.
Don't use a drill bit to enlarge the hole.
Use a tapered grinding stone in a drill motor.
Go in from both directions.
Only takes a few minutes that way.

Tell me what you guys think of this solution. Aside from Alum-Steel welding rod which is expensive.

I have a torch, just need steel brazing rod, and maybe some flux, flat head machine bolts.

Is there enough room to do this?
