NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- So is this what President Obama had in mind?
General Motors (GM, Fortune 500) - under an end-of-May deadline to come up with a viable plan of operation - has joined forces with personal-transporter maker Segway to develop a two-seat, two-wheeled, electrically powered vehicle for use navigating city streets.

i really cannot fathom the point of this. sure, it has some rain protection... but has no crash protection, doesn't meet NEV regulations, and would be likely $10k if it reached production (based off of the "stock" segway cost). why must road vehicles balance on two side by side wheels?

This is a distraction.

They've built this to try to embarrass themselves for someone else's benefit.

So I could buy a Tesla or an Aptera? Oh, that sounds better than one of THESE!

Did you know Aptera has big oil on it's board of Directors?

At least Musk is keeping it together, isn't he? I hope so.

Anyway don't waste any more time looking at this garbage! 6 minutes of your life to waste, at most!

Love the marketing though... can't find the link now but read something like "...eighteen months of product development"... Completely overlooking approx.200 years of development of the fore-and-aft Victorian pedal bike...

Just curious to know who (eighteen months ago) first tossed who the lead(lithium?) life preserver... Segway or GM?

OK, we need a poll here... I'll say Dean called GM first.

EDIT

No Wait! I think maybe GM contacted Dean first "Hey Dean... we need to look "green" and we have (public/free) money... what have you got for us?"
hehe

Gotta chuckle at CNN referring to Segway product as "scooters". The Seg-Heads HATE that word... it's just so unbecoming in their special world...

But wait! It's the SUV of scooters, right? A win-win for everybuddy!

It's hysterical that they had one of the demos/launches/whatever in New York City. The Segway and that vehicle are completely illegal here.

Every single member of the Board of GM and most of the upper management should really be taken behind the woodshed and have the tar knocked out of them!!!!

Advance the Chevy Volt Hybrid.....rebirth the EV-1 and develop it further.

They choose to release the other day that a plant here in Canada(Aliston), just won the bid on another GM SUV.....seriously is another SUV needed? The SUV will be poped out at the New York Auto Show later this week....if I heard the story right.

Heck why not reach into the past and restyle some of the better of the J Bodys?? New Style, better milage, cleaner smaller motors.

What a bunch of clowns.....I think the US Government should just load the rifle and thin the heard some.....leave them to their own fate.....not hand out more money or fast track Chapter 11!!!!

The segway concept is a complete waste of time. What the heck do we need a gyro scooter for? It's not as if we need vehicles that balance on two wheels side-by-side. It just requires alot more goofy engineering to make it work. And for what? Because it looks interesting? What a waste of talent and resources. Everyone at GM working on this project should be immediately fired, and all coms with Segway closed. If this is what my tax money went to go pay for, then it's no wonder our whole country is in trouble. We really do have bigger idiots in charge now, than we did before.

If I was forced into owning an urban electric car, I would want something like this. At least it has purpose and style. Thus, it actually appears to have a reason to exist, if they ever build one.

Canadian Government announces plans for similar product, to save Quebec furniture manufacturing jobs, plus provides exercise:

From the Marketwatch site:

"Jim Norrod, chief executive of Segway, said the global distributor network offered by GM would allow the Puma to potentially outsell the 60,000 units bought up of the Segway Personal Transporter, which was first rolled out about seven years ago."

Wow. Over 60 thousand Segs sold over seven years. There's a sales trend GM should jump right on!

I'm surprised u guys aren't more positive.
Lot's of negative thinkers here.
A shame.
It was the most interesting vehicle in the news this week, at least for me. VERY COOL!(not that i'd buy one, but no harm in looking)
