Good tire brands? Wide white wall.

Hello my friends. I have an Ebike which maintains an average speed of 35 mph. The front tire that came on the bike is new, but crap, it is out of round, it has high and low spots causing the bike to hop down the road which is very dangerous on turns. This is not a result of the rim being out of true, the bike shop said it was the tire itself (is it possible it is the innertube?)

Anyway, the Ebike is on a Schwinn Windwood :

If it is actually the tire, I don't know what a good tire brand is, as I have never had to actually replace a tire. I would assume your average walmart tire is not perfectly round, this is not a problem going "normal speeds" on a "normal bike" but this is a problem at the speeds we are able to run. What tire brand should I get? PS I need the tire to be a wide white wall.

I have been pleased with the quality and long wear life of Bell brand kevlar tires, that were cheap compared to bike shops exotic brands. I don't know where to source the white walls though. Lots of others are sure swearing by schwalbe tires.

I have found the tires that come on mongoose, kent, etc are notorious for only lasty about 400 miles or less before getting lumpy. A better tire, even the cheap bells, should last thousands of miles.

My beach cruiser has a similar problem with cornering (although it doesn't go 35mph!). It doesn't have anything to do with the tire being out-of-round or the inner tube. The problem is, it has a squared edge along the side of the tire (rather than being rounded). This leaves the main tread flat, then it transitions with a squared edge to the whitewall. When I take a corner and lean, it rides on this squared edge which causes it to feel unstable and wobbly as it moves from one side of the edge to the other...

Maybe this is the same problem you're having... either way... I'm interested in everyone's tire suggestions too...

if it's a Schwinn then the tire on there is a Kenda. I've never had good luck with Kenda tires, although the Kenda that come stock on the bike are usualy lower quality than the replacement tires sold at Xmart.
Kenda makes a K130 Whitewall. Its probably not much better than what you have
Bell Is a cheap but reputable brand.

But on the better side are the schwalbe ReTurner HS 361 whitewalls. or you could go with there Fat Frank solid white tires. I'm running those on a Felt 1907 and love them.
they also offer the HS 110, HS 159 tires in a whitewall.

Thank you for the usefull info. I have been browsing the thread you posted and the 26x2.35 schwalbe Big apple seems like the way to go. I wonder though, will it fit my fake classic bike with its fenders on? I would hate to take these flimsy things off. Is it possible to know before finding out the hard way?

There are a number of tire sizes that nominally correspond to "26 inches" - what we need is the ETRTO or ISO Bead Seat Diameter.

I would wholeheartedly recommend Shwalbe, they have done me great service in the past and continue to impress. Many top European brand cycles use these as OEM equipment.

What width are you looking for?

Hello northernmike. My fork width is 3 5/8in what is that like..? 91 mm...

But it looks like it will hit my front brake arms first (the kind mounted to the top of the fork.. cantilever? correct?) the distance there is about 3 in = 74mm

Look at your old tires, tell us every single marking on them. We need the number to go forward. Pics could help too.

But really, why go super-wide? Good quality at a reasonable width will provide you the best ride characteristics.

I put a set of cream coloured Shwalbe Delta Cruisers on my lady's Pashley Princess and they're just beautiful. I rode them at 65psi and she's running 35 on them - they're quite easy-rolling, stylish as hell, kevlar belted and have a reflective strip on the sidewall for safety - what more could one ask for?

I have not got a digi cam, (I just tried with my phone, it looks like a large turd with a red bike parked ontop of it) best I can do is upload you a video of my tire to youtube. If that is what you wish, I will do that. Till then here are the markings on my tire: XCE Inflate to 40 PSI (57-559) 26x2.125 E-702-08

The idea behind the wide fat tire is that it would act as a suspension, as I have none at the moment. Hitting manholes on this thing is enough to pop me off the ground and cause the tire to spin out once it returns to the pavement. It has even popped me sideways almost into cars. The streets where I live are horrible.

I understand PSI but if someone could explain what the other markings mean that would be grand. Thank you in advance as always.

It looks like you can get tires up to 2.3" wide in this BSD.

Reid Welch has had some success with Fat Frank tires used as low-pressure suspension, you might look to him for advice.

Personally I run 20-23mm wide tires at 130psi, and avoid manholes on fear of death.

I would run reasonable tires at a reasonable pressure and navigate prudently!

i use 26" x 2.3" specialized rhythm tires($40.00 LBS) great multi-use tire with tread covering the entire sidewalls. It has minimal rolling resistance but yet enough tread to ride packed dirt trails without fear of a cruiser or hookworm tire kicking out on you.

Skeet, how fast do you normally ride, at what speed? How are these tires for suspension/ handling bumps, curbs etc?

I planned on the Big apple first but D-man hated it compaired to his Hank tire, so I assumed that was the way to go... and it's half the price

Have you used the Big Apple tire?

The ReTurner HS 361, this is good for tire suspension as well correct?

BTW, what does the (57-559) on my tire mean? I have seen this number and higher as I am shopping for tires. (can you tell I'm a noob?)

i find the tire to be the best at handling overall for packed trails and pavement/bumpy pavement. they are 40 dollar tires but i have not use the hookworms since i found the specialized rhythm first. my average cruise speed is between 28-32 mph and live on a 1 mile dirt road before i hit town. you would think that the tire would be HUGE at 26 x 2.3 but its actually a smaller profile tire than my bontrager 26x 2.125 that i had previously. the specialized tire is wide but lower/closer to the rim that a big (bubble) cruiser/street tire. sorry for the bad description but this tire is def worth looking at!

If you don't mind a solid black tire, you might consider the Maxxis Hook worms. I'm running 26X2.5" and its the best riding tire I've ever run. its a semi slick, but the unusual tread pattern on it grips better than any road tire I've run, and works well in sand, gravle, grass, thorn bushes, rock, car hoods, logs, BMX tracks, Skate park half pipes, and of course, the street.

BTW, what does the (57-559) on my tire mean? I have seen this number and higher as I am shopping for tires. (can you tell I'm a noob?)

The 57-559 is the ISO metric size of the tire. This is because there are at least two sizes for "26 inch" so going the metric route makes a lot more sense. The diameter is 559 mm (rim diameter, not tire) and the 57 is the width of the tire in millimeters. To do the conversion, divide 57mm by 25.4 to get inches. A 57-559 is a 26x2.25 tire.

WTB has another rating which I really like, it is the tire tread width and the tire casing width. My WTB Motoraptor is rated this way 60/55-559. The 60 is 2.4 inches wide and is the width of the tread. The 55mm is 2.17 inches wide and that is important to figure out how wide a rim you need to handle the width of the tire.
